Atlantic City Electric Continues Power Restoration as Galloway Returns to Life
Most traffic lights and many businesses are now operational.
Atlantic City Electric continues its restoration efforts, announcing that in total, 119,000 customers across the state were without power at 10 a.m. Sunday morning, July 1.
The recovery in Galloway Township seemed to be on track early Sunday afternoon, as most traffic lights and many businesses in the township were operational.
The recovery continued two days after a storm meterologists have termed a "derecho" with winds in excess of 70 miles per hour struck the Mid-Atlantic Region Friday night. Downed trees and massive power outages struck the state, hitting Atlantic and Cumberland counties the hardest, according to Atlantic City Electric.
In Galloway early Sunday afternoon, things seemed to be returning to normal:
* traffic lights on the White Horse Pike, Pitney Road and Jimmie Leeds Road had been restored, but some lights on Route 9 were still not operational;
* businesses up and down the White Horse Pike were open, for the most part;
* businesses in Risley Square were open;
* businesses in Village Square, including ShopRite, and the surrounding businesses at the intersection of Jimmie Leeds and Pitney roads, were open;
* many other businesses up and down Jimmie Leeds Road and Route 9 were still closed and without power. However, the lights on Route 9 in the Smithville section were operational, and businesses in that area, including in Historic Smithville and the Village Greene and the Smitty's Super Foodtown shopping centers were open.
Atlantic City Electric deployed more than 180 resources on Saturday, including linemen, tree crews, Call Center staff and field support personnel. An additional 400 resources were deployed on by 6 a.m. Sunday morning, according to Atlantic City Electric.
“We received and deployed additional crews this morning, and we are making solid progress on our restoration efforts,” Atlantic City Electric Atlantic City Region President Vince Maione said. “This has been a massive undertaking with great progress made, but much more work is needed to restore power to all customers.”
Currently, Atlantic City Electric is making recorded outbound calls to customers to update them on the restoration status, Atlantic City Electric said. All outages and downed wires should be reported to 1-800-833-7476, through atlanticcityelectric.com or through the mobile app, available for downloading at atlanticcityelectric.com/mobileapp. Atlantic City Electric advises customers to request a call back to verify their power has been restored.
