Christie to Seek Re-Election
Chris Christie announced he would seek a second term as New Jersey governor.
Gov. Chris Christie will seek a second term as New Jersey's governor.
He made the announcement during an appearance at a press conference at the Port Monmouth Fire Dept. Monday afternoon. Christie declined to talk in detail about his bid, saying he is saving that for a more formal announcement in January.
But he did say he sought the advice of his wife, Mary Pat, and four children, over the Thanksgiving Day weekend, and got their blessing.
"I have a job to finish that I would have never anticipated to have six weeks ago," said Christie. He said loved the Garden State. "I want to leave it better than I found it when I'm done."
The gubernatorial election will take place in November 2013.
In response to a question about whether he would still focus on cutting taxes in light of the Hurricane Sandy crisis, he said he would not waver.
"It's more important than ever to cut taxes," he said, adding that it is especially crucial to the ability of small business owners to rebound.
Christie made his announcement surrounded by uniformed representatives of Middletown Township's fire and first aid workers, whom he said he admired for their dedicated service. "These folks are a reassurance to me," he said
In attendance was state Sen. Joseph Kyrillos, Monmouth County Freeholder Serena DiMaso, Deputy Mayor Stephen Massell as well as Middletown homeowners who came to hear the governor in person.

Really? - It's ironic how the electorate holds Republicans to their campaign pledges but that barometer does not exist for their Democrat rivals. I'm not aware of a single campaign promise achieved by President Obama in his first term...in fact, quite the opposite.
Donna Griffin
7:23 am on Wednesday, November 28, 2012
Really? - Therein lies the problem. Presidential elections are no different than some of the dribble reality shows on TV these days. Folks "like" someone so therefore he, in their mind, is qualified to be president. No objective measures are part of that decision, it's simply they enjoy the candidate's face time on Letterman so let's have him be the leader of the free world. Experience and performance criteria mean little to Americans. They vote for the candidate with the best public relations staff and the candidate who "owns" the mainstream media. I'm not specifically talking about Obama/Romney here either. I'm speaking more about the discerning ability of the average American and his/her ability to think critically. A presidential candidate should never have a rabid fan base. He is not a football or baseball team. He is an employee of the voter and I simply wish we would be more prudent with our hiring practices.

@Donna Griffin: well stated. But wishing for the American voter to be able to think on their own is wishing for the impossible. The average American idiot knows nothng about politics, but can recite from memory every finalist of American Idol for the last 5 seasons. Ask them who their local, state, or federal legislators are and they will not be able to answer.

Really??? - I have a difficult time "accepting" the demise of a once great nation particularly because I love my children. I think that the financial and educational futures we are handing off to the next generation are immoral. Settling for mediocrity and the acceptance that Americans are, by and large, superficial and ignorant is a scarey proposition for me. Clearly, however, I am in the minority. I've always said that we get the government that we deserve. With freedoms eroding and public education failing our children at the rapid pace it is, I can assure you that the country we see today will circle the drain at an accelerated rate.
Donna Griffin
2:06 pm on Wednesday, November 28, 2012
Really?? - I am a firm believer that a nation's educational system is the single most important determining factor in laying the groundwork for its future. Ours is failing and failing rapidly by any international objective standard. Add to that the fact that there are more Americans per capita collecting public assistance (Social Security, Unemployment, Food Stamps, Medicaid, Housing, etc.) than ever in the history of our nation. I cannot help but think that an optimistic, "cyclical" future is what is in store for 20 somethings fresh out of college. If we continue to pay people not to work and have little expectations that they must find work, we will bury our nation quicker than any foreign enemy could ever hope to. Those pulling the cart are outweighed by those sitting in it. It is a mathematically unsustainable formula.

Charlie- every governor has balanced the state budget. It is a constitutional requirement. He used the same type of one shot quick fixes as other govs have which he promised he would not do. As far as getting rid of waste in government he has not. He has put his cronies in high paying jobs to pad their pensions, Scharfenberger and Halfacre for two local examples. Christie has stated that his distant familial connection to Genovese crime family leader Tino Fiumara never came up during his Federal Bureau of Investigation background check for his position as a U.S. Attorney; he told The New York Times in 2009 that he had assumed that investigators were aware of the connection.[25] During his tenure as U.S. Attorney, Christie recused himself from his office's investigation, indictment, and prosecution of Fiumara for aiding the flight of a fugitive.[25] A 2011 commentary on MarketWatch identified Fiumara as Christie's aunt's husband's late brother and said Christie has dismissed the relationship as a "private matter

I give him credit for his position on attempting to get immediate Federal assistance for us after the devastating storm as he pushed politics aside. I dislike Chris Christie intensely. I find him rude, crude and out-of-control. While I will admit that he did a reasonable job handling the storm (unless you live somewhere other than the Jersey shore) he has raped the municipalities. We were supposed to have had a 2% cap on property taxes. I have not found a single town where that has happened. My taxes went up 5.4%, while we do not have enough firefighters to even start fighting a fire until mutual aid arrives. I would like to know where all the money is that Christie skimmed from municipalities and state agencies.

Give the middle class and lower middle class tax holidays and threaten the wealthy with tax increases to offset those cuts. Get the student vote and give free college to anyone whose income is below say 100k. Also legalize pot to get the young vote. Its easy to get elected and Obama was the master at it! Oh, *everyone* adored him... everyone thought he handled the 9-11 crisis/tragedy/situation beautifully, and compassionately. People who previously hated his politics and the way he ran NYC were all surprised and feeling good about Giuliani... for a while, at least. Within 18 months following 9-11 Giuliani started to revert back to his old ways. Not so adorable anymore.... not the big hero. Same ol' republican nonsense as before. New Yorkers hate him again. There is no way to anticipate how the voters will react in four years. In an incomprehensible twist of fate, Ray Nagin was re elected as mayor of New Orleans after he totally mishandled every aspect of Katrina and then successfully blamed the devastation on the federal government. Of course he did so, phoning it in from his luxury hotel suite.
As @anonymous said, Bush 41 had great popularity and was undercut by Clinton with the catch phrase,"it's the economy, Stupid". Sadly, we live in a time when spin masters are exerting enormous influences on elections. Christie will need to develop a campaign strategy that is as direct and focused as his way of governing. He cannot run the same campaign that got him elected because he was too vulnerable to attacks. The opposition will be even more relentless in their attempts to derail him because they know re election will put him that much closer to the presidency.

Doesn't anybody wait to see who his opponent will be? He has pluses and minuses and isn't running against Corzine this time. But his concept of across the board tax cuts is poor economic policy and any tax cut for the next several years will be a disaster. Progressive tax rates are a conservative principle, always have been. I like the way he's handled the hurricane response to date, but the praise (or criticism) about how he has conducted himself with the President is more a reflection of the crassness of the general partisan divide that exists.
Most recently, I believe Tom Kean ranks as one of our top governors and Christie certainly has been presented a challenge that will test his ability. Whoever wants to run against him had better have a real background in leadership.

@truth. Are you really making a comment about the President's mother-in-law living in the White House? You can't possibly be such a small minded person.
I know people chose to move away from their families and friends of a lifetime to move here and let UPS be the contact with their grandchildren, but you're seriously begrudging one widowed grandmother to be with her family? What a sad little person.

Gotta disagree with you Truth. It's Christie that has enabled his friends by dumping them in government jobs like the 60 cronies he found jobs for at the Port Authority. He also has a running mate that committed fraud to enable a friend a high-ranking job at the Monmouth County Sheriff's Department. This is the man that was so against fraud, yet he does nothing about his running mate, Kim Guadagno.

Christie has been nothing special. Everyone thinks he's doing such a great job because:
A) He's a Republican, not an "evil" Democrat.
B) His rhetoric is that of a no-nonsense fiscal conservative.
C) His admittedly effective handling of the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.
Truth is, he has used the exact same approach to taxing and spending as Democrats, pushing tax hikes on those who can least afford it (i.e. an 87.5% Port Authority toll hike) and increasing spending substantially in the current fiscal year. As for his crisis management skills - anyone who is as strong a speaker as he is should be able to convince people that things are getting accomplished, even if it's not the case. When it comes to the usual spin, double speak, and dancing around questions that politicians are so good at, Christie is especially adept. That's apparently what he likes out of his candidates for office as well, as he endorsed Mitt Romney over the genuine budget-cutting conservative of the presidential field in Ron Paul.
Christie, in concert with the media and pseudo-conservative talk radio, whose hosts have embarrassingly inept fact checkers (or are secretly working to undermine the cause of limited government), have succeeded in brainwashing the people of this state into thinking that positive things are happening. Truth is, we're just getting the same policies that we have all along.
If you want a real conservative, go with Steve Lonegan or Murray Sabrin, or someone they endorse.

When has this state ever run a conservative for any major office? A lot of people referred to Bret Schundler as a conservative, but many forget that he was a Democrat at one time ... not only that, he was torpedoed by the faction of his own party that favored Bob Franks (including then NJ GOP Chairman and failed U.S. Senate candidate, Joe Kyrillos). All I know is that the Republican Party in this state has been running left-of-center Republicans for major office for decades, and they have either lost (i.e. every single person they picked for U.S. Senate) or proven to be big government hacks just like their Democratic counterparts (i.e. Chris Christie Todd Whitman). Most people base their opinions on politicians on irrelevant things ... they don't notice that living in this state isn't getting any easier, they notice that he's a Bruce Springsteen or a Mets fan just like them. He might have a more appealing personality than most of the Democratic Governors this state has had in the past few decades (one possible exception being Dick Codey), but that doesn't make him superior in any way to the rest of the bunch. Same policies, cloaked in different rhetoric: that's all there is to it. Lonegan did very respectably in the last primary, considering the margin by which he was outendorsed and underfunded. Sabrin, if he actually gets the opportunity to present his ideas with being given the blackout treatment by the media, could also have a decent shot at getting elected.

Well everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but honestly I hope our state goes in a different direction. Yes I do agree that for hurricane Sandy he did a pretty good job by our state, THIS time around. BUT, does anyone else remember that late winter snow storm of 2010 / 2011? The one where Christie was in Florida at Disney and our roads were not getting plowed or salted or anything? Did all of you Chris lovers already forget that little gem of NJ history? I sure haven’t.. I remember Christie saying he wasn’t leaving his vacation to come back here and plow our highways, as if that was the issue here at the time.
I also don’t like the way he intentionally dragged his feet regarding the medical marijuana program here in NJ. It took him several years to come up with the program we now have. Several years. Really? Talk about wasting time and resources while sick NJ residents suffered…Christie talked about legalized sports gambling instead. Now factor in his bully/verbally abusive demeanor and I say no thank you to his re-election. No more Chris cronies on the state watch, collecting multiple pensions either. There's just no need for it..

For starters, If you have any memory at all, you should remember that it was indeed our state highways that saw no snow treatments, or plows for quite a long time. I'n not talking about my street or your street, cut me a break. And yes it should have been just that simple, call DPW and get those guys moving; a very simple phone call and yet it did not happen, that is exactly my point.... Also, its NOT about the 38 other states not having medical pot at all, its about (try and understand this) taking over 2 years to to materialize the medical marijuana program here after it was passed. Let me try it another way to help you understand, Corzine passed it, Christie sat on it and than drug his feet. Not one of the 17 other states in this country took two years to form a medical pot program after it was passed, not one...Do you understand that? If not, just try and read this post again, but slower this time...

Those BMWs could very well belong to food stamp recipients. Obama did away with the resource limit for food stamps. The program is now based only on income. If they can show no or little income by hiding it then they can collect food stamps. Before they were required to dispose of some assets and spend the money on necessities.

Truth be told, it's actually many of the right-wing complainers -- such as some of the posters here and Governor Romney -- who were too lazy and/or indifferent to earn "entitlements." I am a Vietnam vet who stayed in the Reserve for another quarter century, forgoing all family vacations for almost two decades, instead serving at military posts throughout the country, helping to defeat the Communist menace during the Cold War.
I am now "entitled" to a modest military pension, commissary privileges, and medical benefits, all of which are now under attack by those who failed to serve. There are many like me throughout America (although fewer in this part of the country, which tends to expect others to defend their rights).

Donald, I thank you for your service and if anyone is indeed entitled (not in the pejorative sense) to be rewarded for their citizenship it is you and other veterans and serving military. There is indeed good government service/benefits and bad, as there is good and bad government as a whole. I think when people speak of the "the entitlement class" I personally don't take it to mean anyone collecting anything from the government. Certainly a soldier returning from a tour of duty in WW2 was helped by the GI bill but that in turn was a good investment in the future of this nation...as our zenith in the 1950s-70s can attest to the results. It is the welfare class that has come to rely on government for its very existence that is the target of their ire. Romney unfortunately used the generic "47%" as his concern which unfairly scoops everyone not paying federal income tax regardless of circumstance into the category of listless ward of the state. To me the "productive class" is not merely those who earn enough to pay federal income tax. It is anyone who is contributing to society in a way that does not demand we subsidize ad infinitum their lives. A college student on the way to earning a masters in engineering or a hard-working post high school or college worker in an entry level position in any company, a soldier walking the wall on our behalf, or a senior who HAS worked his/her whole life are not the same as a 40 year old able bodied man in line for a disability check.

Tim O C, you're hitting it right on the head with your 11/27 comments. Someone replied to my previous post that "It must suck to live in Ocean County". Hey folks, don't kid yourself. The corruption here is supported by both sides of the aisle in Trenton, as it would be in any County if it is to their monetary benefit. It's very frustrating (and alarming) to see both "R" and "D" citizens being stepped on and abused by the thugs in power, and then having their cries for help ignored by those (of both political affiliations) who are charged with enforcing the law (at the local, county, state and federal level). Mr. Christie partook in such practice when he was the federal attorney. I'm hoping that someday the people wake up and realize that this "D" and "R" opium that they are smoking is nothing more than a tool for those in power to keep them under control. We're all being abused and ripped off by the crooks we keep putting back in office.

Before passing judgement we need to know who will be his opponent. If it is Corey Booker, Christie is better. Booker tried to stand up to Obama during the campaign; got smacked down; and much to his embarrassment, submitted like a whimpering puppy. That makes him hard to respect. Being the mayor of Newark doesn't mean much because they've been living on the state's dime forever. Christie has his flaws but following Mc Greevey and Corzine (two of NJ's most corrupt Govs, which is a LOT to say) makes him look like a competent pillar of integrity.

Well this morning I listened to someone saying how Christie helped Obama get re-elected..Wow what B.s. that is go tell all those people that Christie visited for weeks after and helping them understand they will get help and the walks with Obama had to help those people in those bad times...It wasn't a political move it was we are here to help...I'm not a fan of Obama and we to make the best of 4 more years...Maybe by then all damaged areas from sandy will be recovered...And my vote than will be for CHRISTIE...

Wow! I see so many posts here comparing Christie to obama. Chris is a governor and barack is a president in title alone. Being that our goverment leaders are suposed to be working for us. Perhaps somone out there remembers "for the people, by the people". In my opinion Chris is way closer to acheaveing that than barack. My vote is with Christie for govener and anyone else for president ASAP befor the current office holder can do any more damage to our country. Chris has not damaged our state but made some tough and unpopular choices based on what the people as a whole want. Yes there are some select groups out there that did not want those decisions to be made but "for the people, by the people" to me would be the general public not some select groups. barack on the other hand makes his decisions simply to please select groups, not the general public. BOTH do follow through with what they say they were going to do.

I assume you are one of the "mindless lemmings" from Lacey who vote by letter rather than by what the candidate stands for. You can ignore all the unlawful acts committed by Christie's "friends" here in Ocean County, and hopefully you never end up as one of the innocent citizens that get harmed as a result of being in the wrong place at the wrong time when these "thugs" are looking to pad their pockets further. To reiterate what I've said previously, those who are charged with enforcing the law, and choose to look the other way when their cronies commit serious crimes, are more guilty than those that commit the crime in the first place.... that's your buddy Chris Christie.

LT Guy, apparently you are very ignorant; about lemmings, they are rodents and while I am sure Lacey has rodents this particular mammal is not a native to this region let alone the town. Lemmings are usually found living in the arctic regions in tundra biomes, not Lacey township NJ. (For more information see wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemming) I vote the way I feel comfortable with, D,R,I TP it really doesn't matter to me, When I vote I have usually spoken to EACH of the candidates I had access to, and I do go out of my way to take the time to meet with them personally and ask them my questions. Is it possible they lie, cheat and over promise to get into the office they desire? Yes absolutely but it is also likely that as voters we might just be expecting more of them than can be delivered given the environment they have to work in. Government is an ever-changing climate I personally think we need to have more real regular people in office, younger and less career politicians in government.

The lemming reference was to the habit of these rodents to "follow their leader" to the point of following them over a cliff. Thanks for the lesson anyway. I'm glad that you think before you vote, a practice that appears to be fairly uncommon in Lacey and Ocean County (per election of a Sheriff who was on his death bed, and comatose for years). I was attempting to point out that by ignoring the injustices committed against "regular people" by his "buddies" here in Ocean County (and yes, some in Lacey), the former Federal Prosecutor, and now current Governor, Chris Christie is just as guilty as those who profited by their crimes. I can give you examples of such crimes if you have an interest.

great point lt. he makes the civil servants replace money whitman stole and makes no laws to stop this from happening again. he also knows of the corruption in nj and has done little or nothing against it. he's for big money and that's not with the masses of nj, but with the corrupt empires run by his crooked cronies from njtransit to port authority, atlantic city pay offs and gifts etc etc. the lt guy is right. we are lemming following are corrupt leaders off the cliff. but alas we are just as corrupt so just make sure we push them off before we jump or follow.
