Eleven Homes on Gull Wing Court Evacuated Due to Gas Leak
A resident was attempting to remove a stump when he broke a gas line.
Eleven residences on Gull Wing Court were evacuated Friday morning, Feb. 22, when a resident attempting to remove a tree stump punctured a gas main, according to Fire Chief Tim McKenna.
There was no fire, no one was injured and the residents are already returning to their homes, McKenna said.
McKenna believed the resident attempted to remove the stump by hand and using a smallt tractor.
"The police department arrived and evacuated everyone's homes due to the wind," McKenna said. "They were brought to the Smithville Community Center and neighbors' houses."
South Jersey Gas reported to the scene, and the situation is under control, according to McKenna.
"Homes were evacuated for about 45 minutes to an hour," McKenna said.
Gull Wing Court is located just off Quail Hill Boulevard in Smithville. Both roads were temporarily closed.
Oceanville and Bayview volunteer fire departments responded to the scene. EMS was on standby, McKenna said.
