Food Stamp Benefits for Hurricane Irene Victims Available at Galloway Library
Atlantic County residents can apply for a supplemental nutrition program at any library throughout the county through Sept. 20.
Atlantic County residents have lined up at libraries throughout the county, including the county branch in Galloway, to apply for a nutrition program available to victims of Hurricane Irene.
Residents can apply for a Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) benefit if they experienced extensive material losses as a result of Hurricane Irene or subsequent flooding, according to aclink.org. The county will process D-SNAP subsidy applications through Sept. 20.
D-SNAP is a one-time food assistance benefit that can be used for the purchase of certain food items. Residents not already receiving D-SNAP benefits and whose storm-related damages extend beyond loss of food due to power outages may be eligible. Benefits are made available via card similar to a debit/credit card.
Residents in need may apply for benefits at the Atlantic County Library Galloway Branch during the following hours:
Sept. 13-15, 3:30-6:30 p.m.
Sept. 16-17, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Sept. 19-20, 5-7:30 p.m.
Anyone who misses an appropriate date may apply on Sept. 20.
The State Department of Human Services' Division of Family Development is coordinating the effort with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Services.

What documentation do you need to bring if you are not already receiving D-SNAP benefits and your need is based on loss of food due to power outages?

I'm not sure, but all your questions will be answered if you call the Atlantic County Department of Family and Community Development at 609-345-6700, ext. 2701.

Unfortunately many Galloway Township citizens waited in line on September 20th only to be told after 3 hours they they were not taking any more applications. When the citizens asked why and not given an answer, the police were called. The citizens then were told to leave or be arrested. It seems to me that if they were only able to process so many applications, they should have had the courtesy to let the people in line waiting know this before allowing them to stand in line for three hours. Shame of whoever was in charge of this much needed program for such poor treatment of the citizens in they time of need. Can someone give an explanation for this uncaring treatment?

You're nuts! Those people didn't need any help. No one in Galloway suffered a power outage that weekend for their food to go bad. They were just sticking it to the man. Wake up!
