Gary Dimartine was known for a lot of things. Not only was he a professional BMX rider, but he also made BMX films, and, according to those who knew him best, he was adventurous, loyal and happy.
On Friday at The Boneyard in Atlantic City, hundreds of his friends and family gathered for a concert to remember Dimartine, who . The event was also a fundraiser for his family.
"Gary would be the first person to say 'let's party,' 'let's do this'...it's a celebration of his life," said John Guttschall, the organizer of the event and a member of the band Cut It Out!, which reunited specifically for this show.
Behind the stage, a slideshow of pictures of Dimartine played throughout the night. It showed him having fun with friends, and often biking. There was even a shot of him riding his bike off of a roof, a stunt that Dimartine was known for.
In fact, Dimartine was so good at riding his bike off of roofs that Banned BMX made a Dimartine signature bike stem, which ESPN.com described as being meant for "straight drops."
Dimartine's mother, Yvonne DiCarlo, said that her son would have loved to see hundreds of his friends gathered together at the bar that he saw so many of his friend's bands perform at.
"I think he touched a lot of people's lives in different ways," she said.
Anthony Pitucci, Dimartine's cousin, used to attend shows at The Boneyard often as well. He and Dimartine were close in age.
"It's awesome...I used to come here pretty frequently," he said. "It's cool seeing this place get packed for him...everybody loved him."
One of Dimartine's best friends, Robert Peffer, who had been close with him since they were 13 and who used to ride bikes with him, said that Dimartine was the most loyal friend one could have, and said that he had the courage to do things that many others would not.
"He knew how to live better than anybody else. He made it down to Florida with nothing and lived for six months before he came back, and he took advantage of every opportunity given to him," said Peffer. "He would appreciate this so much. I know from the bottom of my heart he would."
Besides Cut It Out!, the other bands that performed were Eternity Void, Malice Aforethought, Iwo Jima, One Hundred Year Ocean and Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate). Some of the bands had not played together for years, but reunited to honor Dimartine, who had been an avid music fan and who had been known to show up often to see his friends perform.
