One Person Injured, Fluid Leaked Following Overturned Crane in Gardener's Basin
The Coast Guard is calling the scope of the pollution "minor."
One person has been taken to a local hospital and 50 gallons of hyrdaulic fuel were leaked as the result of an overturned crane in Gardener's Basin outside Absecon Bay Tuesday evening, Jan. 29, according to the Atlantic City Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard said the leak was secured quickly, and called the scope of the pollution "minor." The cause of the accident is under investigation.
According to Coast Guard representatives, the crane overturned at 6:30 Tuesday evening when the crane operator was attempting to load the fishing boat Michael Junior. The crane car toppled over, and ended up halfway in the water and halfway on land, Coast Guard officials said.
A local environment control team was deployed to the scene, and utilized two small sections of containment boom to prevent the fuel from spreading, according to officials.
A boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Atlantic City was joined on the scene by crews from the Atlantic City Fire Department, Atlantic City Police, and EMS personnel.
The crane operator was transported by land to an unidentified local hospital with a possible head injury. The identity of the operator was not available.
