Police Apprehend Suspect Following Tuesday Morning Chase; Another Still at Large

A Somers Point man fled on foot as police were attempting to identify him during traffic stop.

Galloway Township and Absecon police apprehended a Somers Point man who fled during a routine traffic stop Tuesday morning, Jan. 3. A Folsom Township man who fled in the same incident is still at large.

Matthew Tomlinson, 24, of Somers Point, was one of three occupants of a white 1997 Ford Explorer that was stopped by Galloway Police Officer Bryan Casey on Route 30 just east of Eighth Avenue at 10:27 Tuesday morning. Tomlinson initially provided a false name to police. He then fled the scene on foot across Route 30 as police were trying to determine his true identity.

Casey and K-9 Cpl. Mark D'Esposito, who had arrived on the scene to assist with the stop, pursued Tomlinson through a wooded area and into a residential area in Absecon. Additional Galloway officers and several from Absecon responded to set up a perimeter.

Tomlinson was eventually apprehended near Morton and Shelburne avenues in Absecon. Tomlinson was eventually discovered to have a violation of probation warrant from the Atlantic County Superior Court, as well as a municipal warrant. He was charged on Tuesday with hindering apprehension, resisting arrest and aggravated assault on police.

When police returned to the car with Tomlinson, they discovered another occupant of the car, 35-year-old Folsom man Troy Helduser, had also fled the scene. Helduser was charged with hindering apprehension of another and obstruction of justice. He remains at large.

The driver, 21-year-old Somers Point woman Alysha Levenski, remained on the scene during the pursuit of Tomlinson. She was charged with hindering apprehension of another and motor vehicle offenses for having a broken windshield, view obstruction and no rear-view mirror.

Tomlinson was transported to the Atlantic County Justice Facility and his bail was set at $50,000 cash.
