Press Of Atlantic City Up For Sale
Parent group ready to relinquish ownership after 60 years, paper says
The parent company of The Press of Atlantic City has put the newspaper up for sale, the newspaper said on its website Monday.
John F. Bitzer III, president and chief executive officer of ABARTA, which owns The Press Media Group, announced the development Monday on the Press's site, pressofatlanticcity.com.
Jim Hopson has been named the interim publisher and chief operating officer. Hopson was formerly publisher at The Press Media Group from 1989 to 1994, according to the site.
The newspaper was one of the most prolific and popular news sources in all of South Jersey and southern Ocean County, south of Berkeley Township. The newspaper's coverage changed in recent years when it closed its Manahawkin office on Route 9 and made similar cost-cutting moves.
The Asbury Park Press, which also covers southern Ocean County, announced last week that the newspaper is closing its Neptune office.
