Press Of Atlantic City Up For Sale

Parent group ready to relinquish ownership after 60 years, paper says

The parent company of The Press of Atlantic City has put the newspaper up for sale, the newspaper said on its website Monday.

John F. Bitzer III, president and chief executive officer of ABARTA, which owns The Press Media Group, announced the development Monday on the Press's site, pressofatlanticcity.com.

Jim Hopson has been named the interim publisher and chief operating officer. Hopson was formerly publisher at The Press Media Group from 1989 to 1994, according to the site.

The newspaper was one of the most prolific and popular news sources in all of South Jersey and southern Ocean County, south of Berkeley Township. The newspaper's coverage changed in recent years when it closed its Manahawkin office on Route 9 and made similar cost-cutting moves.

The Asbury Park Press, which also covers southern Ocean County, announced last week that the newspaper is closing its Neptune office.

More information on this development can be found here.

If the APP is shrinking as has been stated, the first casuality will be the Vineland Daily Journal.

The time has unfortunately come to embrace change. People on the go and expect their news and media to go with them. Not in paper form though in digital form. A casualty of this change will be the newspapers because for whatever reason we believe news in a digital age should be free. Think about it, you would pay to get your digital copy of vogue or muscle magazine delivered to you phone or tablet but you wouldnt subscribe to the app to be delivered everyday to your device. This is because in a digital era news is plentiful or free. These changes are just the tip of the iceberg as far as where digital is going. I know because I am a developer working on huge projects to enhance print media ajd make it interact or come to life as well as geo location based media that will tie the real world amd virtual world together. If time permits I will try to write a blogpost on the subject if anyone has any interest.

I can understand how newspapers are morphing from print to electronic media, but who's going to report the local news? We're not just losing newspapers; we're losing reporters too. Whatever format it takes there's a need for someone to cover the local news. What if Time (I think they're the parent company) decides to pull the plug on Patch? It's purely a financial decision for them.

Don't worry, with Jeff Jarvis on board the webmedia is thriving. This was one of many ideas from that fertile mind.

there are many apps online, (even FB!) and on mobile devices that provide up to date live and local news. The print media is extinct.

If, as you state that it is 'just another bogus breaking news story' how can you truthfully explain the news release in the Press of A.C.? Oh, yeah - you don't read newspapers do you? It just so happens that the "PATCH" is a very large group of internet news media that is quickly but assuredly replacing newsprint ( it saves trees too).

Putting up for sale, a local newspaper that focuses on South Jersey is not breaking news. Patch has gotten into the habit lately of making everything "breaking news" to drive up page hits. Honestly, not sure what your rant about me not reading newspapers is all about. Maybe you have me confused with someone else.

Most of the print media except for the Wall Street Journal
are in support without question of the LEFT WIND DEMOCRATS.
We plan to cancel all print issues as coupons were once a reason
for the print issues ... with food and retail prices on the rise, a
mere coupon is no longer a reason to subscribe ...
don't believe me, read their slanted editorials that too often
kissing up to President Barrack Hussein Obama.
Hold on this year is going to be a battle of who blinks first.

Wall Street Journal ... New York Post ... Fox News (?) Channel ... all owned by Newscorp., as in Rupert Murdoch. Go ahead and keep getting your "news" from them, including their slanted editorials (editorials and columns are supposed to be opinions, but then I'm sure you knew that).

Chris:
The Press of A.C. does not, and I repeat does not cover 'all' of South Jersey. They do not cover Gloucester County [mid and western], Salem County [none] Camden County [mid and western] As to breaking news; yes it is since, it gives NJ.com a greater expanse of coverage by South Jersey Times, which covers all that are avoided by the Press.
