A local pastor and area students team up to create a moving tribute to all mothers.
Everyone has a mother (whether alive or dead, close or distant), and with Mother's Day a few day's away, it's hard not to appreciate the simple and heartfelt beauty of a song recently written by the Rev. Edward F. Namiotka, pastor at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Somers Point. The song is Namiotka's first creative musical attempt and his inspiration was, of course, his mom. It is performed by a group of local elementary school students, and links to a video posted on YouTube (watch it above) are spreading across social media networks. Namiotka provides the best background on the creation of the piece: Each month, when I have a day or two off, I spend some time with my mother at her condo at the Jersey Shore. She and I have grown …

The comedy filmed in Ocean City is set for release to theaters on July 19.
Ocean City plays a supporting role in a Kristen Wiig comedy film set for release on July 19. The island serves as the setting for the story of a woman (Wiig) who fakes suicide after a romantic break-up and returns home to live with her mother (Annette Bening). The recently released trailer (watch it by clicking on the video above) features scenes of the Ocean City Boardwalk, rides, pizza parlors and even a beach outfall pipe. "Girl Most Likely" premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival and was previously titled "Imogene." The debut there led Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate to pick up the film for distribution. It features the "Icona pop song, "I Love It." Matt Dillon and Darren Criss also star in the film. Crews were in…

The movie will be shown on April 22 and April 29.
The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey will screen the award-winning documentary "Chasing Ice" twice over the next two weeks, the Go Green Task Force for Sustainability announced this week. The first screening is Monday afternoon, April 22, in the Board of Trustees room at noon. The second showing is Monday night, April 29, 7 p.m. at the Student Center Theater. "Chasing Ice" is the story of one man’s mission to change the tide of history by gathering undeniable evidence of our changing planet. Within months of his first trip to Iceland, the photographer conceived the boldest expedition of the life: The Extreme Ice Survey. James Balog and a band of young adventurers began to deploy time-lapse cameras across the brutal Arctic to capture …

She performs in New York tonight.
Winding between barstools scattered along the slate gray floor, the golden-haired, fair-skinned girl takes a seat alongside three middle-aged men. Unshaven and bleary-eyed, the musicians begin to play as 10-year-old Haley Richardson perches her fiddle beneath her chin. Philadelphia Councilman Jim Kenney noticed “this little angel” immediately, he said. After watching Haley play at the Plough & the Stars in Old City, Kenny invited the fifth grader to be a part of a March city council meeting, where local government recognizes Philadelphia’s Irish heritage for the 22nd consecutive year. “She is savant-like,” Kenney said of the Pittsgrove Township girl. And the at-large councilmember is right. When Haley was three years old, she taught …

The high-flying pro wrestler has lived a wild life, but he’s not ready to quit. He’ll sign copies of his new autobiography at Barnes & Noble in Deptford on Saturday.
You remember Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka. And if you don’t? It’s not his fault. He’ll be 70 in May, but he hasn’t given up the one thing he loves more than anything else in this world, the one thing that made him a superstar: professional wrestling. “I have a hard time trying to stay away from the business,” he says in a rasp that instantly brings you back to the glory days of the early '80s, when he was on television, wild-eyed and ranting about exacting revenge on fellow wrestlers Don Muraco and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper. Snuka last wrestled about a month ago, at a benefit in Michigan. The days of performing his acrobatic signature move, the “Superfly Splash,” from the top rope, are long gone. Now, thanks to a bum ankle, he can only leap from the …

Her CD release party is Jan. 26 at the Showboat in Atlantic City.
After a delay of almost three months, Lori Lenzi is preparing for her return to the music world. Lenzi, a Galloway native who goes by the state name Lori Sunshine, will hold her music release party at the Foundation Room inside the Showboat Casino Hotel in Atlantic City on Jan. 26. The party was originally scheduled for Nov. 3, but was postponed when Superstorm Sandy hit the area earlier that week. “She’s excited about her tour being kicked into gear,” said Galloway Councilwoman Whitney Ullman, whose WIN Promotions and Consulting company is sponsoring the event. “She’s really dedicated to her music career. She’s been working hard, rehearsing daily, working out and doing her music.” Ullman said that although the devastation wrought by Sandy…
