Stockton Announces 2013-14 Performing Arts Schedule

The 2013-14 season in Galloway Township will offer plenty of new and exciting shows, lectures and more affordable tickets .

The following news release is from the Richard Stockton College Performing Arts Center:

The Stockton Performing Arts Center’s 2013-14 Season will offer plenty of new and exciting shows, lectures and more affordable tickets to the public!

Cheaper Seats!  The new ticketing policy will charge only $32 for all shows, for all seats, first-come-first-served reserved seating.  With only 500 seats in the house combined with the amazing layout of the theatre, there isn’t a bad seat to be found.  This will make our shows more affordable to our patrons.  Tickets may be ordered online at www.stocktonpac.org or by calling the Box Office at (609) 652-9000.  The Box Office is open during the summer Monday-Thursday, 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and starting in September the Box Office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and ninety minutes before the performance.  For Group Sales, call (609) 652-4786.

Shows for the kids! The PAC will present a Children’s Saturday Matinee Series to cultivate the theatre audience of the future.  There will be fun for the whole family with an affordable ticket price of just $12.

Stockton Students Learning the Ropes! This season the PAC has begun a partnership with the college’s Student Entertainment Team.  This partnership allows our staff to mentor and work side-by-side with students from the process of show selection to marketing and PR plans, advancing the show and finally, the
presentation of the show; thereby affording the students hands-on experience producing a show from start to finish.  In the fall the PAC and SET will co-present “The Blues Brothers Revue” which is on its way to Broadway; and in the spring they will co-present Ryan Cabrera, Teddy Geiger & Tyler Hilton.

Free Lectures! The PAC is proud to announce the Stockton Performing Arts Lecture Series.  Dr. Jeff Goldstein, Director of the National Center for Earth and Space Science Education will do a presentation at Ocean City High School’s brand new observatory.  Howard Sherman, who is a mover and shaker on Broadway, has produced, fundraised and promoted many successful productions.   He is also a noted theatre critic and theatre blogger. This event will be held at Dante Hall Theater in Atlantic City.  Ray Klausen, a well-known Sculptor and Set Designer, has designed over 400 productions for both television and theatre over the last 45 years.  Finally, Ruth Wyand, a popular musician will present a Folk Music lecture and concert focusing on the origins and importance of Folk Music in American Life to be held in the Campus Center Theatre.

Stockton Celebrates Shakespeare! This new program will feature performances of “Twelfth Night” by Aquila Theatre Company; “Hamlet” performed by The Philadelphia Shakespeare Company; and “Midsummer Night’s Dream” performed by the Atlantic City Ballet which will explore Shakespeare through music and dance.

Bravo! Stockton will celebrate Opera Week with the Philadelphia Orchestra performing “An Afternoon of Arias.”

The Stockton Performing Arts Center and The Stockton Entertainment Team present The Official Blues Brothers Revue. The characters of Jake and Elwood Blues, created by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd in 1978, were initially imagined as front men for a fictitious American blues and soul band. Since their film debut in1980, the irreverent characters have resonated with people around the world and the Blues Brothers have catapulted into a cultural phenomenon and musical, comedic, and cinematic legend.

The Earl of Oxford, William Shakespeare, requests an audience for the acclaimed Aquila Theatre’s performance of one of his funniest and most charming comedies, Twelfth Night.  Written in 1600 and set against a background of romance and mystery, this hilarious story of identical twins and mistaken identity, set in the mystical world of Illyria, explores the universal themes of love and all its ambiguous effects on human behavior.

Welcome aboard, mateys! Pirate School! is in session.  This is a madcap, slap-dash pirate training academy that allows both youngsters and adults to discover their ‘inner-swashbuckler.’  David Engel’s Pirate School! is a one-man, sea-faring vaudeville show that spoofs the Golden Age of Sail and satisfies children’s universal curiosity about the briny buccaneers of yore.  Kids rejoice as their boisterous natures are drummed up by the “generally good pirate” Billy Bones and his antic Pirate Lessons.  Parents marvel as their kids are transformed into ‘good’ pirates, swaggering out of the theater encouraged and emboldened by this heartwarming all-ages show.

 

South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble Holiday Concert

Celebrate a long cherished tradition of wondrous holiday performances from the Atlantic City Ballet’s “The Nutcracker” when it returns to the Stockton Performing Arts Center.  Returning for its 27th season, “The Nutcracker” is the all-time holiday favorite show.  Using Tchaikovsky’s romantic score, the program features colorful scenery, period costumes, and a cast of nearly one hundred.  The entire family will be captivated by the timeless story of little Clara, the young girl who receives The Nutcracker as a gift, and her enchanted dream of Princes, Princesses, Sugarplums and Toy Soldiers.

Paul Taylor established the Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company in 1993 to ensure that his works could be seen by audiences all over the world, unhindered by economic or technical limitations. Mr. Taylor worked with longtime colleague Linda Hodes to create a company that could accommodate performance requests as well as teach and provide community outreach. Mr. Taylor looked back to the 1954 origins of the Paul Taylor Dance Company for the structure of his new company: six professionals with a particular gift for his style who perform his work throughout the world.

Theatreworks USA’s Jim West and company are back in an all-new puppet extravaganza with Dinosaurs! And of course, more silliness than ever!   Fossil, the dinosaur detective, mixes fun and facts in this colossal show inspired by everyone’s favorite prehistoric creatures.  Among the dinosaurs featured are a Tyrannosaurus, Brachiosaurus and Apatosaurus.  Mozart, Beethoven, Mahler, Stravinsky and Prokofiev provide the rich musical score.  Best of all, watch Jim build a giant Tyrannosaurus Rex!   Jim West combines classical music and puppet construction and facts about dinosaurs into an engaging and funny performance for children ages 4 to 12.

Ray Klausen has designed over 400 productions for both television and theatre over the last 45 years.  He has won 3 Emmy Awards - two for his designs for the Academy Awards and one for Cher.  He has also designed the sets for 2 Tony Awards, 8 American Film Institute shows, 10 Kennedy Center Honors, and 26 American Music Awards.  He has created sets for Barbra Streisand, Madonna, Elton John and yes, even Elvis.   His theatre productions include sets for “Cat on the Hot Tin Roof” and “On Golden Pond” - both starring James Earl Jones, “Liza's at the Palace,” “Bea Arthur on Broadway,” and “Brooklyn the Musical” plus numerous regional productions.  He is currently working on the sets for a Broadway play and is producing a full length opera.   He is a graduate of Yale University School of Drama.

The Atlantic City Ballet’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”

Atlantic City Ballet’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” follows Shakespeare’s comic story line of a mischievous fairy as he leads two pairs of young lovers on a wild and merry chase through the woods outside of Athens. Throw in feuding fairies and a troupe of bumbling actors, and you’ve got a sparkling comedy with something for everyone! Ms. Papa first created Midsummer in 1999 as a multi-disciplinary piece with actors, singers, and dancers.

 

In 2006 Phyllis Papa, reworked Midsummer into a full length ballet that has delighted audiences since its premiere.

 

One Man Star Wars Trilogy

Spin Magazine declares that “One Man Star Wars Trilogy” is “funnier than you could possibly imagine.” Ever since 2002 – when Charlie Ross started touring this theatrical oddity – he’s been asked questions like:  “How long do you see yourself doing this show?” and “Don’t you get bored of doing the same show night after night?”  The long answer is that since its first tour across the North American Fringe circuit, One Man Star Wars has performed over 1,200 times in more than 180 cities across four continents.  From Off-Broadway in New York to London’s West End, from Dubai’s resorts to the Glastonbury Music Festival --in small towns, big cities, at Lucasfilm’s own Star Wars conventions, at fundraisers-- this show has been places.

There is something in this script that keeps us all coming back.  It is the most produced, most discussed, and best-known work of literature, not just in the English-speaking world, but in the entire world.

 

Who could even try to count the thousands upon thousands of productions of Hamlet, movies of Hamlet, books about Hamlet, and books about books about Hamlet?  What we hear most about this play is: “Hamlet is me.”  There is something in this character that strikes a deep chord of recognition in all of us.

‘“A Journey Down an American Music Highway” written and performed by Ruth Wyand is a multi-media concert. In this musical and media performance, Wyand covers 150 years of American Music from the Civil War to the present. This is sure to be an entertaining and educational concert.

 

South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble: A Touch of Italy

The South Jersey Area Wind Ensemble, South Jersey’s Band, will perform a concert with some old world selections added to give it just “A Touch of Italy.” Fifty of South Jersey’s finest high school and college musicians are invited to sit side-by-side with the sixty-five member band for a portion of the concert. The high energy of the combination of experienced musicians and talented students always produces a program that thrills every member of the audience. This concert is a highlight of the SJAWE season and can be enjoyed by music lovers of all ages.
