Atlantic County's five shelter locations for those in need following mandatory evacuations due to Hurricane Sandy are now open, county officials said Sunday morning.
There are three pet friendly shelters, one "general population" shelter and one "medical needs shelter" for those who need continuous supervised medical care. All shelters are run by the Red Cross.
Rain is predicted to begin on Sunday afternoon, followed by heavy winds beginning Monday night into Tuesday.
County officials are encouraging people who are evacuating from the barrier islands or elsewhere to do so sooner rather than later as roadways may become increasingly congested and flooding could make roadways impassable in some areas.
Shelter locations are as follows:
General Population Shelters
Pleasantville High School, 701 Mill Road
Pleasantville Middle School, 801 Mill Road
Pet Friendly Shelters – animals must in carriers or on leashes with a supply of food and necessities
Buena Middle School, 175 Weymouth Road
Buena Regional High School, 125 Weymouth Road
Medical Needs Shelter (Pet Friendly)
Restricted to those who need continuous supervised medical care
St. Augustine Preparatory High School
611 Cedar Avenue, Richland
Those in need of assistance should contact their local office of emergency management. Contact numbers are available online at www.ReadyAtlantic.org and in the Verizon phone book.
