Five Things You Need To Know

Independents have until Sept. 4 to submit their petitions to run in November's special election.

1.     Petitions for those hoping to run as independents in November’s special election for Galloway Council are due to Township Clerk Thalia C. Kay by 4:30m p.m. Sept. 4. Traditionally, petitions are due 64 days prior to Election Day, which is Nov. 6 this year. However, because Labor Day is 64 days before Election Day, the deadline is moved to the next business day, which will be Sept. 4.

2.     Independents must have 2 percent of the total number of votes cast in the last State Election for General Assembly seats, which took place in 2011. That total vote was 7,206, meaning a potential candidate needs 144 signatures.

3.     As of Monday afternoon, Aug. 6, Democrat Jim McElwee had filed all the necessary paperwork to run in November’s election. Republican John Mooney, who was selected to fill the vacant seat last Wednesday night and appointed Thursday afternoon, 2 p.m., had not filed paperwork as of 3 p.m. Monday afternoon. The municipal complex was closed on Friday, due to ongoing furloughs.
