Get Out: 9/11 Events

The countywide event is not the only way to commemorate 9/11 on Sunday.

Sunday, Sept. 11 marks the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Atlantic County will mark the anniversary at the Anthony “Tony” Canale Training Center, but that’s not the only thing happening to mark the anniversary.

Here’s a list of the events taking place in and around Galloway Township to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Feel free to email us with information if there is anything we may have missed at Anthony.Bellano@patch.com.

The countywide ceremony will take place at the Anthony "Tony" Canale Training Center, located at 5033 English Creek Ave. in Egg Habor Township on Sunday, Sept. 11, beginning at 11 a.m. This will be in place of all township ceremonies, including Galloway's, which is usually held at

Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the South Jersey Shore is having a Water Ceremony. This intergenerational service will include commemoration of Sept. 11, 2001, and it will also be a celebration of community, because, as the congregation puts it, “joy and sadness are often intertwined.” Those attending are encouraged to bring about an ounce of water in a reusable or recyclable container.

For the Sept. 11 service, remember to bring a small amount of water from your travels or waters having some special meaning to you. They will combine that water with waters from previous years. This tradition has various meanings to Unitarian Universalist congregations: some see it as a symbolic welcoming back from summer vacation travels, some as a welcoming to new members, and others as a reaffirmation of our sixth principle using water as the symbol of interconnectedness. There are still others as a representation of the melding of the past with the present.
