Heat and Air Quality Warnings Issued

The National Weather Service recommends staying inside as much as possible.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory, to remain in effect for all of South Jersey, including Galloway Township and Atlantic County, until 8 p.m.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has also issued an air quality alert for Atlantic and Cape May counties until 10 p.m.

The current temperature in the township is 87 degrees, and is projected to reach 95 degrees this afternoon, with a heat index of 105.

Thunderstorms are possible for later today and tonight, with a 20 percent chance of precipitation.

A heat advisory means that a period of very hot and humid
conditions is expected, the National Weather Service said. It also recommends staying in an air conditioned location, staying hydrated and keeping an eye on elderly relatives and neighbors.

Pets should have access to plenty of water and shaded and ventilated areas, the service advises.

Those working outside are advised to schedule strenuous activities for the late evening, and to wear light and loose fitting clothing and to drink plenty of water.

The NJDEP's air quality alert is a Code Orange, meaning air pollution
concentrations within the region may become unhealthy for
sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, people suffering from asthma, heart disease or other lung diseases.
