Mobile Gaming Coming to Atlantic City Temporarily

The regulations took effect on Monday, and will last 270 days.

Anyone staying at an Atlantic City casino hotel can temporarily play casino games on mobile devices issued by the casino. That means a person can play blackjack on their iPad or iPhone anywhere in the hotel, including the pool.

The Division of Gaming Enforcement’s Mobile Gaming Regulations were adopted Oct. 1 and put into effect Oct. 8, Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa announced Tuesday morning, Oct. 9.

The temporary regulations are in effect for 270 days, and the Division will publish a proposal for final regulations within 60 days, Chiesa said.

“These regulations are another example of the cooperation of all our partners and use of our own imaginations to move past the prescribed technology,” Division Director David Rebuck said in a release.  “I am proud of my staff who worked through this year long process, reviewing regulations from all over the world and working with various manufacturers to understand and develop the mobile gaming regulations. Most importantly in this process was the development of regulations that provided safeguards to prevent underage gambling and to continually ensure the integrity and security of mobile gaming in New Jersey.”

Mobile gaming is the electronic version of authorized games that can be played on mobile devices, including iPads and iPhones, among casino-issued wireless devices Chiesa said. Mobile gaming will be allowed in any area located within the property boundaries of the casino hotel, with the exception of parking garages and parking areas, Chiesa said. Any recreation and swimming pool areas are included in the permitted areas, according to Chiesa.

Gaming software affecting wagers or gross revenue require the software provider to obtain a gaming related casino service industry license, Chiesa said.

Nevada passed similar regulations in September, 2011.

“We are looking forward to having Atlantic City casinos take advantage of mobile gaming and we see these regulations as one more step in the expansion of gaming opportunities afforded to Atlantic City customers,” Rebuck said.
