Power Fully Restored Following Derecho

All Atlantic City Electric customers had their power back on Sunday.

A little more than a week after 206,000 Atlantic City Electric customers lost power in the wake of a derecho, and two days after the original date set to have power restored, all of Atlantic City Electric's customers have their power back, the electric company announced on Sunday, July 8.

According to Atlantic City Electric, power was fully restored as of 2:15 Sunday afternoon. Going into the weekend, various portions of Atlantic County were still without power, although no sections of Galloway were listed among those still in need.

The storm hit the Mid-Atlantic Region early morning Saturday, June 30, knocking over trees and leaving many areas without power. Original estimates indicated most people would see their power restored by the end of the Fourth of July, and that anyone who didn't have it back would see it restored by the end of the day Friday, July 6.

On Sunday morning, the Federal Emergency Management Agency issued a statement that, in part, classified 34 deaths as storm-related, and reported that 30 overnight mass care shelters had been opened in five states.

Atlantic City Electric worked around the clock with the support of 1,500 personnel to restore power to those effected, the electric company reported.

“The derecho was by many accounts the most destructive storm to strike the Mid-Atlantic region since Hurricane Isabel nearly a decade ago. Restoring service has been a mammoth effort involving about 1,500 total personnel,” Atlantic City Electric Atlantic City Region President Vince Maione said. “We appreciate the patience and understanding of our customers who had to cope with outages during record-breaking heat. We thank all personnel dedicated to the restoration effort, our partners at the emergency management agencies who provided critical relief coordination and support, and government officials and the media who assisted with communicating to our valued customers.”
