Reports: Meteor Spotted Over DC, New York, New England and New Jersey, Including Galloway

One person in Galloway reported seeing something Friday night.

Twitter was abuzz Friday night with reports of a large, bright meteor streaking across the night sky over the East Coast.

Several readers told NBC4 that they spotted the meteor just before 8 p.m. Friday.

According to the American Meteor Society, one person from Galloway reported seeing the meteor at 7:45 p.m., stating they were standing "on a baseball field when the sky was lit by the meteor." There was no delayed or concurring sound reported.

Twitter user Brenton Laverty characterized it as a huge, green meteor burning up over DC.

Another user from Montgomery County, PA — E. Steven Collins — described the object as "Bright. Orange. Blue. White. Silver. Totally streaking by the sky light! Wow!"

According to several outlets, the object may have qualified as a fireball, defined by the American Meteor Society as a "very bright meteor, generally brighter than magnitude -4, which is about the same magnitude of the planet Venus in the morning or evening sky."

Patch will have more information on Friday's sighting as it becomes available.

I saw it last night as it was falling from the sky in Galloway. I was maybe 100 yards over my head and it was a blue fireball that disintegrated into an reddish ash right over Sunrise in Galloway. It was amazing!

There were actually two of them last night one around 7:50pm (the one I saw in Galloway) and another one a little after 8. My husband and friend saw one over the parkway.
