UPDATE: Power Mostly Restored in Absecon

Massive power outages remain for most of the barrier islands.

UPDATE, 10 P.M.: Power has been almost completely restored in Absecon after over 2,300 people were in the dark earlier in the day. According to the Atlantic City Electric Power Outage Map, "less than 5" Atlantic City Electric customers remain without power.

The barrier islands remain largely without power, including Atlantic City, which is reflecting 2,149 outages; Brigantine, which is reflecting 206 outages; and the barrier islands of Ventnor, Margate and Longport, which are showing 16,409 outages.

ORIGINAL: Flooding has begun in parts of Atlantic City and three roads in the county have been temporarily closed, Atlantic County officials announced Wednesday afternoon, March 6.

The county is also dealing with massive power outages.

The White Horse Pike in Absecon, as well as Shore Road and Ohio Avenue are all closed due to flooding. The Black Horse Pike remains open, but is reduced to one lane in either direction in Pleasantville and Atlantic City, according to county officials.

Additionally, 19,073 people in Atlantic County are without power, according to Atlantic City Electric.

That number includes 16,401 people in the barrier islands of Ventnor, Margate and Longport; 2,913 in Atlantic City; and 2,363 people in Absecon.

For the most part, Galloway Township still has full power.

At one point, 19,000 people were without power on the barrier islands due to two transmission lines being knocked out of commission. Those lines are still down.

The electric company has restored power to over 22,000 customers as of 4:30 p.m. Less than 35,000 people remained without service throughout the electric company's coverage area.

“Despite difficult conditions, we’re responding as quickly and safely as possible to outages that have been scattered across the service territory,” Atlantic City Electric Region President Vince Maione said.

The electric company has 140 line personnel and 125 contractor personnel working on restoring power, and extra personnel are prepared to work through the night to restore power.

The storm began Wednesday afternoon and brought with it rain and strong winds of 32 miles an hour, with wind gusts of 49 miles an hour. Snow is expected later today, and the county is expected to get around an inch. A high wind warning and a coastal flood warning remain in effect.

County officials reminded travellers the Atlantic City Expressway is the safest option as an alternate route. They also reminded drivers not to drive through flood waters, risking personal safety or damage to their vehicles.

All NJ Transit services remained operational and unopposed.

Atlantic Cape Community College canceled night classes on Wednesday, and if classes are canceled on Thursday, that will be communicated early on Thursday. The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey's lacrosse game was canceled, but no announcement was made on classes.

As of Wednesday evening, Galloway Township Schools and Absegami High School had not canceled classes for Thursday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is predicting a mix of rain and snow before 11 p.m,  followed by rain between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m., followed by a mix of rain and snow after 1 a.m. This pattern is expected to continue through Friday, with sunshine expected on Saturday.
