UPDATED 2X: Travel Ban, Areal Flood Warning in Effect for Atlantic County

UPDATED 12:45 p.m.: There are currently 5,188 power outages throughout Atlantic County, officials are reporting.

Atlantic City officials have issued a curfew for the city, from 6 p.m.-6 a.m. Portions of the boardwalk have sustained damage, and there are several feet of water in the streets.

Mandatory evacuation is underway in the West Atlantic City portion of Egg Harbor Township, and a mandatory evacuation is underway for Northfield, east of Shore Road.

Ocean and bay waters have met in Longport, and phone lines are down. Longport officials are going door-to-door, urging residents to leave.

The river bulkhead on Route 40 in Mays Landing is overflowing, causing flooding issues in the center of town.

A large tree is down in Estell Manor, blocking Route 50. Route 50 and Main Street is underwater in Corbin City.

Traffic lights are reportedly out in Ventnor.

Shelters at Pleasantville High School and Pleasantville Middle School are continuing to fill up, but room is still available.

UPDATE: 10:58 a.m.: Atlantic County offices and the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office will both remain closed on Tuesday, Oct. 30, county officials said.

Buena Regional High School is prepared to take some of the overflow from Buena Middle School, which has 152 people. Pleasantville High School shelter has 141 people; Pleasantville Middle School has 89; and St. Augustine Prep has 41, according to county officials.

Atlantic City Electric is reporting 1,844 power outages in the county.

The Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management announced a travel ban and curfew that took effect midnight Sunday night.

On Monday morning, the Office of Emergency Management issue an areal flood warning for the county until 6:30 as roads began to flood. An areal flood warning means there is potential for flooding over a large area.

The travel ban restricts travel on all county and municipal roadways, county officials said. Only vehicles transporting essential personnel or those who provide essential public services including police, fire, EMS and authorized emergency management personnel will be permitted on roadways until the ban is lifted, county officials said.

As of 7 a.m. Monday morning, the five shelters in Atlantic County were housing approximately 400-500 people and 16 pets, county officials said. Officials estimate about 30,000 of the 66,000 barrier islands evacuated over the weekend. The shelter at Buena Middle School is at capacity.

High tide was expected at 7:41 a.m., and flooding along the Great Egg Harbor and Mullica rivers was among the concerns, county officials said.

Some flooding has already taken place on Route 40 in West Atlantic City, Route 30 and Route 9 in Absecon, Route 559 at Woodlawn in Somers Point, Route 322 and Cologne, and Danenhere Lane in Hamilton Township, Park and Tunney roads in Mays Landing, and Bay Avenue in Longport.

County officials are instructing residents who experience power outages should report them to Atlantic City Electric at 1-800-833-7476.
