Downed Traffic Light Closes Cologne Avenue and Aloe Street For Four Hours Saturday Morning

Two drivers were sent to the hospital with non life threatening injuries.

An accident that resulted in a traffic light crashing in the street closed parts of Cologne Avenue and Aloe Street for four hours on Saturday while repairs were made, Galloway Township Police announced.

The accident occurred at 8:50 a.m. when Valerie Sye, 57, of Waterford Works, ran a stop sign and hit a 2001 Pontiac Montana being driven by Margaret Stringer, 51, of Hammonton.

Sye was driving a 2008 Chevy Impala east on Aloe Street when she hit Stringer, who was travelling north on Cologne Avenue.

After being hit, Stringer’s car went off the road and struck a utility pole and a stop sign. That’s when a traffic light fell into the road and blocked the intersection.

Germania Fire Department extricated Stringer from her vehicle, and both drivers were transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center City Division for non life threatening injuries.

Sye was issued a summons for careless driving.

Cologne Avenue was closed between Route 30 and Aloe Avenue, and Aloe Street was closed between Leipzig Avenue and Cologne Avenue for four hours.

Atlantic City Electric and the Atlantic County Utilities Authority repaired the light and signs.
