Hamilton Mall Reopens Following Early Morning Fire

The fire began at Hollister, and was electrical in nature.

The Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing has reopened following an early morning fire that reportedly began at Hollister and was electrical in nature.

The smell of smoke was still prevalent around 10 a.m. Thursday morning, Feb. 7, throughout the mall. The main entrance to JC Penny remained open, but the stores inside were closed with no estimate of when they may be reopened.

However, the mall was fully operational less than an hour later, with every store opened except Hollister.

According to the Hamilton Township Police Department, the fire began at Hollister, and was determined to be electrical in nature. Police believe a flourescent light fixture may have caused the problem.

The store suffered fire and water damage, but no other store was damaged and no one was injured, according to police.

An employee in the store discovered and reported the fire, according to police. Hamilton Township Police and the Cologne, Mays Landing and Laureldale fire departments responded to the scene at 6:06 a.m. They were able to extinguish the fire in about 30 minutes, with the assistance of the store's sprinkler system.
