The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office had no new developments to report concerning the investigation into the death of Brandon Holt, 6-year-old Toms River boy who was fatally shot by a 4-year-old neighbor, on Monday morning, April 15, according to Agent of the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Jay McKeen.
The case was transferred from Ocean County to Atlantic County last Tuesday night to avoid any potential conflicts among law enforcement who may have ties to the case, Ocean County Prosecutor Al Della Fave said last week. The shooting occurred last Monday night, April 8, and Holt died on Tuesday.
The longstanding policy of the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office has been not to comment on, or acknowledge the existence of, an investigation, although it is expected to make an announcement if charges are filed in this case.
Holt was shot with a .22 caliber rifle while the two were playing together in the neighbor’s yard on McCormick Drive. It remains unclear how the four-year-old came into possession of the weapon, or how the gun was triggered. The parents were “nearby” at the time of the shooting.
No names have been released for the child or the parents.
Services for Holt were held over the weekend.
