Ray Rice, Former Rutgers Standout, Indicted Following Atlantic City Domestic Dispute

Rice was indicted on one count of aggravated assault. A conviction could result in a jail sentence of 3-5 years.

Baltimore Ravens running back and former Rutgers University football player Ray Rice was indicted in connection with the physical assault of his girlfriend outside the Revel Casino in Atlantic City last month, Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain announced on Thursday.

Atlantic City Police reported to the casino on Feb. 15 to investigate the incident between Rice, 27, and Janay Palmer, 26, both of Reistertown, Maryland.

Rice and Palmer were both charged with simple assault, a disorderly persons offense. Both were released on summons complaints, and the case was referred to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

Aggravated Assault is a third degree crime, and carries a potential penalty of 3-5 years imprisonment.

The case has gained attention nationwide because of Rice’s celebrity status. He holds 11 Rutgers University rushing records, including career yards and career touchdowns. He was drafted by the Ravens in 2008, and won Super Bowl XLVII with the team following the 2012 season.

Video footage of the incident was made public the day the Prosecutor’s Office assumed control of the investigation, on Feb. 19.
