Atlantic City Firefighters Face Layoffs Due to Government Shutdown

The department was applying for more grant money to pay the firefighters when the federal government shut down last week.

A group of Atlantic City firefighters hired under a federal grant earlier this year face layoffs in the federal government shutdown doesn't end soon, CBS 3 Philadelphia reports.

The fire department applied for more money for the grant, but the approval process was halted when the federal government shut down last week, according to the report.

The result could be 51 firefighters getting laid off, leaving two or three companies out of work, according to the report.

Unless the government reopens, the firefighters will be out of work just before Thanksgiving, according to the report.
