Freeholders Receive In Writing Assurances No Tolls For Galloway

Freeholders Dase and Marino explain that no tolls will be coming to Galloway at Freeholder meeting Tuesday afternoon.

Atlantic County freeholders met Tuesday in Northfield to discuss county bridges and concerns about the parkway rest stop in Galloway, which was addressed by two freeholders, who sought to clear up a few common misconceptions about the state's plans.

After the meeting, Richard Dase, District 4 Freeholder, who represents Absecon, Brigantine, Galloway Township and Port Republic along with Freeholder-at-Large Alexander Marino explained that there has been a lot of confusion regarding the plans for the parkway rest stop along with any effects it may have on the area.

This confusion may be put to rest during the meeting on August 22nd, which will be held at the township's city hall building on 300 E. Jimmy Leeds Road. The meeting will begin at 4 p.m. Freeholder Dase will be at the meeting to represent his constituents.

Freeholders Dase and Marino want residents to be assured that access to and from the parkway will not cease. The only things that residents will be losing access to are a Sunoco station, Burger King, KFC, Nathans and a TCBY.

Two of the five aforementioned amenities can be found within three miles of the rest stop.

Another Sunoco is located on 17 Jimmie Leeds Road and Wing It, a restaurant which serves specialty hot dogs, is located at 26 E. Jimmie Leeds Road, a fifth of a mile away. Further down on Jimmie Leeds are two ice cream establishments.

A concern addressed by the two freeholders was the issue of a new toll. According to the two freeholders, the county has received, in writing, assurances from the Turnpike Authority that there will not be a toll for entrances or exits at the new interchange.

Additional business addressed at Tuesday's County Freeholder meeting regarded construction costs for two road involvement projects in Galloway.

Resolution 453 regarded a county contract with A.E. Stone, Inc. in Egg Harbor Township. A repaving project on West Duerer Street in Galloway was completed by A.E. Stone for $54,766.17 less then the estimated $1,180,477.57 that the contract had originally called for.

The project improved road quality, guide rails and the draining system.

According to the resolution, summary mandatory asphalt and fuel price adjustments, fewer man hours and line items all contributed to the savings for the county. The decrease amounted to 4.6 percent of the bid price.

The other construction project addressed by the board regarded intersection improvements at Jimmie Leeds Road and 6th Avenue.

Resolution 454 involved the a county contract with DeFalco & Bisconti in Atco. The project ran over the estimated $1,212,423 by 10.2% to $1,336,374.23 due to extra excavation, dense graded aggregate and asphalt base course in addition to fuel costs, along with other safety costs and which included $13,500 for variable message boards.

A topographical error also left five traffic signal standards off of the bid sheet, the correction added $10,500 for the cost.

The next meeting of the county freeholders will be in Mays Landing on August 24 at 4:00 p.m. at the county building.
