Galloway Receiving $251,000 in Grant Aid

The township is one of four Atlantic County municipalities receiving the funding from the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

As Galloway Township Mayor Keith Hartman noted at Tuesday night’s council meeting, the township will receive a $251,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation for work that needs to be done to Great Creek Road down to Wrangleboro Road.

On Wednesday afternoon, the NJDOT announced the money would be distributed as part of $966,000 the Christie administration was distributing to Atlantic County municipalities. Linwood, Pleasantville and Egg Harbor City also will receive funds.

The money distributed to Galloway, as well as to Linwood, falls under the Safe Streets to Transit project, which helps create a safer means of reaching mass transit facilities.

There has been concern over the ability for high school children being able to reach bus stops safely down this portion of the road.

Linwood will receive $209,000 for their project.

Pleasantville will receive $380,000 for a bikeway extension, and Egg Harbor City will receive $126,000 for a streetscape project.

NJDOT will provide 75 percent of the grant amount needed when a town awards a contract, and the other 25 percent upon completion of the project.

“These grants will support a variety of safety and quality-of-life projects at the local level without burdening local property taxpayers,” NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson said via press release.  “The level of competition demonstrates how valuable these grants are to local officials who make difficult spending decisions each year.”
