Go Green Galloway Begins Earth Day Celebration Saturday

Events will continue through May 14.

One week from today is Earth Day, the day set aside to acknowledge that we should be kind to our home, the Earth.

However, Go Green Galloway gets its celebration started early with the Earth Day Cleanup being held Saturday at the John B. Forsythe Wildlife Refuge. The cleanup begins at 8:30 a.m., and participants are scheduled to clean up all eight miles of Wildlife Drive in the refuge. They will be treated to lunch and giveaways.

Go Green Galloway will report on its effort at the cleanup at the April 26 Galloway Township council meeting, and it will also present the annual Arbor Day Proclamation at that meeting.

Continuing with the theme of caring for the environment, Barbara Fiedler, assistant deputy director of Public Works for Galloway Township spoke of another environmentally friendly event.

“Go Green Galloway is holding our first ‘Bag It’ day on Saturday, April 30 to encourage the community–for one day–to utilize reusable bags instead of paper or plastic one-use bags,” Fiedler said. “The goal is to make using reusable bags common practice.

“We’re looking for volunteers to cover the many stores that will be targeted to receive free bags, and we are also looking for reusable bag donations from local businesses. Those who would like to help us with this effort can contact Mary Crawford at mary_crawford@ml.com or call 609-484-7131 to participate.”

The next major Go Green Galloway participation will be at Galloway Shredding Day to be held May 14. The group will provide information to visitors and participants on energy efficiency, composting, using rain barrels, as well as battery powered electric mower demonstrations, a Fair Trade Display and more.

Go Green Galloway also urges readers to be aware of other environmental events in the area, including ACUA Earth Day on May 1 and the Eco Fair at Wheaton Village scheduled for May 7.
