Go Green Galloway Receives $10,000 Grant

The money will be put toward an Environmental Resource Inventory.

Go Green Galloway will receive a $10,000 grant from Sustainable New Jersey toward a "worthwhile effort" this year.

The organization received the grant as one of four top finishers in this year's competition, and because it was a recipient of a Silver Certificate for its environmental efforts.

The grant falls under Sustainable Jersey Small Grants, which are funded by Wal-Mart.

"The money will be used to conduct what is called an Environmental Resource Inventory (ERI) within the township," Environmental Commission Vice Chairman and Go Green Galloway Secretary Steve Fiedler said. "This means that everything in the community – the township from an historical perspective, the state of the business community, our environmental conditions including wetlands, and every other relevant aspect of what comprises the township – will be evaluated so that we have a far better picture of the present state of everything that must be included in our Master Plan.

"This will help us design a template that will guide us so that we make better choices in the future. The last time such an evaluation of Galloway Township was conducted was back in 1972, thirty-eight years ago. A lot has changed in the community since then. We've had tremendous residential and business growth."

The study will be led by Township Planner Tiffany Cuviello, members of the Environmental Commission, and members of the Task Force for a Sustainable Galloway.

Cuviello has helped the township receive grants in the past to aid in such areas as open space, the development of safe bicycle routes and Smart Growth initiatives.

The document that is created by virtue of the study will help guide the site planning process for development, prioritize open space acquisition, assist in the municipal land use planning process, serve as a reference for municipal ordinances and best management practices, and provide educational resources for township residents.

The goal is to include the document that is produced in the Galloway Township Master Plan by the end of 2011. The township's engineer, Dixon Associates, will aid in gathering the necessary data and create a comprehensive mapping system.
