Maley and Associates Named Special Counsel for Galloway Redevelopment

Maley and Associates replaces Capehart Scatchard due to a conflict of interest, Township Manager Arch Liston said Monday night.

Less than two months after Capehart Scatchard was named Special Counsel for Redevelopment, Galloway Council named a new counsel during its meeting Monday night.

Maley and Associates, based out of Collingswood, was named the replacement for Capehart Scatchard due to a conflict. Capehart Scatchard represents a group the township is currently negotiating with for a housing development on Aloe Avenue, according to Township Manager Arch Liston.

In September, council approved the appointment of Capehart Scatchard with a 5-2 vote. Democrats Jim Gorman and Jim McElwee were the dissenting votes, as they supported Maley and Associates.

The Special Counsel was appointed to help the township handle the influx of development offers the township has seen in the last quarter of the year.

In recent weeks, Mayor Don Purdy spoke of a senior rehabilitation home that went before the Zoning Board on Thursday, as well possible tenants for the vacant Lenox China building and a Burger King.

Although he previously mentioned the Burger King, Purdy reiterated there was still a process the township would go through, including a public hearing, before plans to bring the fast food chain to the township could be finalized.

Collingswood Mayor Jim Maley founded Maley and Associates in 1987. According to the firm’s website, it has handled cases involving redevelopment challenges, civil rights claims, and a class action lawsuit involving mercury poisoning at a daycare.
