Poll: State Assembly Approves Smoking Ban on Beaches; What Do You Think?

The Assembly passed a bill banning smoking on public beaches and in public parks on Thursday.

The state is one step closer to banning smoking in public parks and on public beaches.

The State General Assembly passed a bill on Thursday that would ban smoking at all public parks and beaches by a vote of 64-7, the Courier Post reports. That bill now goes before the State Senate, but no vote has been scheduled at this time.

The assembly bill changes the wording of a law that prohibited smoking indoors to prohibit smoking in certain public places and workplaces. This law concerns state-operated parks and beaches.

It is designed to cut down on secondhand smoke and litter and improve fire safety in these areas, according to the report. Smoking would still be allowed in the parking lots.

What are your thoughts? Does it bother you when someone is smoking near you on the beach? Is it your personal right to smoke wherever you wish?

The secondhand smoke is very annoying. But by far that is exactly what it is - annoying. But by far it is not near the most dangerous thing on the beach. By far the most dangerous thing on the beach is parents assuming the life guards are their own personal babysitters. If your going to fine someone for smoking then parents that don't watch their young children in the water should be thrown in jail. I hate smoking, but it doesn't come close to a safety issue compared to this. Our legislators must have something better to waste their time on. Watch your own children please!!!!

Mr. B, Sugar and salt in public do not blow into the face of people sitting nearby.

then move. until smoking is illegal I believe a smoker has just the same rights as a non-smoker. why is it not your responsability to move instead of their responsability to ban it?

Mr. B is absolutely correct. This whole argument should not be about whether you want smoking in public outdoor space, but should be about how much your government is telling you what you should and shouldn't do. This country was founded on FREEDOMS. If any of you remember grade school history, we had this little thing called the American Revolutionary War. The first act by our forefathers was to enact the constitution, so that tyranny (namely King George) couldn't dictate to the masses. This is exactly how it starts. A few telling us all how we should live our lives. I, for one, am sick of this crap. I don't need my government telling me where or when I can or can't do something that they say is legal. If my memory is correct, that's a Constitutional Amendment, for any individual to pursue happiness. I may not agree with everything that another wishes to do, but God as my witness, I will fight for your right to do it. In this case it's smoking. I smoked for 35 years, and yes, by health suffered for it. I quit because not only is it stupid, but too costly as well. Again, our government at work. Yet, I will argue to my last breath, that I will not interfere with anyone that wants to light up. I will offer my advice if asked, but will not subject another to my will. Neither should anyone else. This is one of those knee jerk reactions to another jurisdiction banning outdoor smoking. I want someone to go up to Obama when he lights up, and slap him with a summons for smoking outdoors, or in a public building. Last time I checked, we the people publically own the White House! Now put that in your pipe and smoke it!

PERFECT for a Family Resort and long overdue! (Second hand) smoke is especially annoying when on the beach with the children. You can be building a sand castle and someone drops their blanket and pulls out a cigar--AWFUL! Many of the small cities where I live, have smoking bans on the exterior and it's immensely appreciated by the majority.
