Absegami Loses to Cherokee

Final: Cherokee scores 34 to Absegami's 20.

A week after scoring six times, Zaire Williams found the end zone just once against Absegami High School.

However, Cherokee High School showed that it has plenty of other players capable of scoring in a 34-20 win in a NJSIAA consolation round football game against the visiting Braves.

Cherokee improved to 6-3 while Absegami is now 4-5 after dropping its second consecutive game.

Braves sophomore quarterback Mike Dolan put Absegami ahead in the second quarter, 13-6, with a 4-yard run. It would be the last lead the Braves had all night.

Cherokee reeled off three straight downs to take a 27-13 lead in the third quarter. The Chiefs' Billy Commiskey caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Max Joseph to go into halftime tied at 13-13.

Matt Stickney scored on a one-yard plunge to open the second half scoring, and Joe Havers 42-yard touchdown pass from Joseph put the Chiefs ahead by 14.

Absegami didn't go away quietly, as explosive running back Tyler Bing scored from 86 yards out to cut the Chiefs lead to seven in the third quarter. However, it was the closest the Braves would get the rest of the game.

Joseph added a rushing touchdown to go along with his two passing TDs in the fourth quarter to give the Chiefs a 16-point cushion.

The Braves' next game is at home on Thanksgiving morning against district rival Oakcrest, which was eliminated from the Group III South playoffs on Friday night after a loss to Moorestown.
