Absegami Football Team Travels to Atlantic City to Open Playoffs

The Braves hosted the Vikings in a regular season contest last week.

One week after dropping a 33-25 decision to the Atlantic City High School football team at home, Absegami will go on the road to face the Vikings in the first round of the playoffs Friday night.

The Braves were seeded fifth in the inaugural NJSIAA South Jersey Group V playoffs, and will face fourth-seeded Atlantic City Friday night, Nov. 16, 7 p.m., according to pairings released by the NJSIAA over the weekend.

The Vikings' win over the Braves last Friday night in Galloway provided the difference in record and  power points, as Atlantic City improved to 6-2 and finished with 128 points, and Absegami dropped to 5-3, finishing with 126 points.

Playoff pairings are based on power points through the first eight games of the season.

Williamstown (8-0, 186 points) was seeded first in Group V, and will host No. 8 Millville (5-3, 113 points) Friday night. The winner of that game plays the winner of the game between Absegami and Atlantic City in the second round.

Eastern Regional High School (6-3, 145 points) is the No. 2 seed in Group V, and will host No. 7 Toms River North (5-3, 120 points) Friday night. No. 3 Washington Township (7-1, 135 points) hosts No. 6 Southern (6-2, 122 points), also on Friday night.

Group V is the largest division for public schools as designated by the NJSIAA, and is in existence for the first time this season. All Group V teams were in Group IV last season.

The high school football season was delayed by one week. After this weekend's first round games, all teams will play their Thanksgiving Day rivalry games, followed by the final two rounds of the playoffs, to be concluded the weekend of Dec. 7-8.

Absegami plays at Oakcrest Thanksgiving Day, which falls on Nov. 22.
