UPDATED: Absegami Girls' Basketball Team Dominates ACIT for Season's First Victory

The Braves will play Wildwood in the Kaitlin Anzelone tournament bracket final at the Boardwalk Classic on Friday.

The Absegami High School girls’ basketball team picked up its first win of the season on Thursday morning, Dec. 27, and did so by scoring more than twice as many points as the team’s previous output this season.

The Braves defeated the Atlantic County Institute of Technology (ACIT), 82-10, in a Kaitlin Anzelone Memorial Bracket first round game at the Boardwalk Classic at the Wildwoods Convention Center, according to statistics on the tournament’s website.

The Braves will now face Wildwood in the tournament bracket final at 2:15 Friday afternoon. Wildwood defeated Lindenwold, 56-32, on Thursday.

Prior to Thursday’s game, Absegami’s highest point total of the season was 36, in a loss to Holy Spirit, according to maxpreps.com. The Braves were 0-3 before Thursday’s victory.

Jenna Seddon and Eva Sodaitis led the Braves into the Kaitlin Anzelone championship game with 19 points apiece. Seddon added two assists, nine steals and four rebounds, while Sodaitis had one assist, six steals and three rebounds. Mary Riggs had 15 points, an assist, a block, three steals and three rebounds. Arielle Schafer had 13 points, a steal and a team-high 10 rebounds for the Braves, who controlled the game from the midway point of the first quarter.

Absegami scored the first points of the game with seven minutes left in the quarter, on an Arielle Schaffer field goal. The closest ACIT managed to get was 4-2 with just under six minutes to go in the quarter, but the Braves then went on a 28-0 run to bring the score to 30-2 at the end of the first quarter. Jenna Seddon had 10 points during this run, while Eva Sodaitis had seven, including a trey, and Mary Riggs netted six.

By halftime, Absegami held a decisive 49-4 lead.

For the game, the Braves outrebounded ACIT, 32-19, and forced ACIT to turn the ball over 38 times. They were were 3-of-3 on three-pointers for the game, with Sodaitis, Riggs and Brielle Clarke each hitting one.

Clarke had nine points, an assist and two steals, and Miranda Romsburg had six points, three assists and five rebounds.

Kelcie Dolan rounded out the scoring for Absegami with one point, one assist, three steals and a rebound.
