Assumption Alum Earns $20,000 Scholarship to Widener University

Victoria Giansante won the university's High School Leadership Award.

A 2010 Assumption Regional Catholic School alumnus won the Wideneer University High School Leadership Award, Assumption officials recently announced.

Victoria Giansante, currently a junior at the Our Lady of Mercy Academy (OLMA), was awarded a scholarship of $20,000 over four years if she chooses to attend Widener for undergraduate studies.

Giansante, of Mays Landing, was recognized for her ability to stand up for what is right and making a difference in the community, officials said.

Giansante is the president of her junior class at OLMA. She volunteers in the community collecting firewood for her elderly neighbors.

When she was enrolled at Assumption, Giansante was one of five students in the Diocese of Camden who received the PTA Diocese Citizenship Award, Schurtz said. Giansante was recognized for her outstanding participation in a number of community service activities.

She was one of 93 high school students recognized by the program, officials said.

The High School Leadership Program recognizes young leaders who have made a difference in their community. Students from New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware are eligible to apply for the program.

“We are proud of Victoria and her academic successes at Our Lady of Mercy Academy,” Assumption Principal Mary Ellen Schurtz said.  “We are equally proud of her desire to help others and to make a difference in her community. Victoria continues to embody the values and caring that are part of our school community.”
