Construction at GEHR Schools Likely to be Done in Phases

The projects were approved during the Dec. 14 special election.

Construction at two of the Greater Egg Harbor Regional District's three high schools approved by voters during the Dec. 14, 2011,  will likely be done in phases.

District officials explained to the Board of Education at its meeting Monday night, Jan. 9 that half of the roof that will be replaced at Oakcrest would be done over two summers.

"The roof cannot be done while the students are there (in school)," Superintendent of Schools Steven Ciccarelli said in an update to the board reported by Business Administrator Charles Mueller.

The project willl be put out to bid in March, with the bids awarded in August, Mueller estimated. He also noted that one of the first payments toward the total cost would be included in the 2012-13 budget.

This proposal was for the roof replacement, fire alarm and heating/ventilation system replacement at one school, and fire alarm replacement at another school, in the amount of $14,222,000.

The amount of the total cost that the district would be eligible to seek state reimbursement for is $8,130,091.

Proposal Two, which was contingent upon approval of the first proposal would have provided for replacing heating/ventilation system in one school at  $12,250,000. The district would have been eligible for $7,002,786 in state reimbursement money if this proposal had been approved by voters last month.

That proposal, however, was voted down at the polls.
