“Maintaining Professional Boundaries in Health Care Settings”
The Stockton Center on Successful Aging (SCOSA) will present a professional seminar sponsored by Right at Home and the Shores of Wesley Manor, scheduled for Thursday,October 11, 2012 from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm at The Shores of Wesley Manor, 2201 Bay Avenue, Ocean City, NJ. The seminar titled Maintaining Professional Boundaries in the Health Care Setting will be presented by Christine A. Gayda, PhD, NJ Licensed Psychologist, SCOSA Service Chair and Visiting Assistant Professor of Psychology at the Richard Stockton College of NJ. Maintaining a caring and ethical relationship with patients requires a delicate balance of compassion and professionalism.
Health care personnel can easily “cross the line” by engaging in behavior with patients that is beyond the “zone of helpfulness.” For example, self-disclosure by a health care provider can have negative effects on the care provided to patients and clients.
Workshop Objectives are as follows: ·

Define the concept of a healthy therapeutic relationship with patients; ·
Understand the definition of professional boundaries; ·

Understand the model of the “zone of helpfulness”; · Understand the “warning signs” of professional boundaries being violated; ·
Learn how to use an assessment tool for identifying boundary violations; ·
Review clinical case studies that illustrate how violations of professional boundaries brought harm to patients and/or their family members.
