Five Things You Need To Know About Monday's Board of Education Meeting

Back to School Nights Begin Tonight

The Galloway Township Board of Education convened at the middle school for its first meeting since the school year began on Monday night, Sept. 17. Here's some of what went down at that meeting:

1.     The Galloway Board of Education held a moment of silence for Gloria Scull, a cafeteria worker at Smithville Elementary School who died on Saturday after battling Cancer. Scull was 50 years old and originally from Corpus Christy, Texas, according to her obituary. She graduated from Marymount International School in Rome, Italy and was married to Donald Scully for 19 years. She had three daughters.

2.     GTEA President Ed Zimmerman sent a letter to the Board of Education this week requesting the start of contract negotiations. The union’s current contract expires on June 30, 2013.

3.     Every school district in the state has been required to assemble an Evaluation Advisory Team to oversee the implementation of Department of Education initiatives, including the Excellent Educators for New Jersey (EE4NJ) program and Teach NJ. The Galloway School District has assembled its team, made up of teachers, administrators, parents, board members and a member of the Superintendent’s Advisory Team. There are over 20 members of the committee who will meet regularly, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Annette Giaquinto said.

4.     The first Back to School Night for the district is tonight, Sept. 18, at the Roland Rogers School, route: {:controller=>"listings", :action=>"show", :id=>"roland-rogers-elementary-school"} -->, 6:30 p.m. Back to School Night is Sept. 19, 7 p.m.;
