The Absegami High School football team pulled out a late victory to pick up its third win of the season Friday night, Sept. 28.
Nick Della Vecchia’s 31-yard field goal in the fourth quarter capped a Braves’ effort in which it overcame a two-touchdown deficit to defeat Millville, 24-21, in Cape-Atlantic League action.
Absegami took the early lead with a Mike Dolan 32-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Bing in the first quarter.
Millville erased that lead with three touchdowns in the second quarter behind two touchdown runs from Rob Ennis, of 65 and 2 yards. DeQuan Bowman added a 72-yard punt return for a touchdown to give the Thunderbolts a 21-6 lead.
A David Hood 7-yard touchdown run before the end of the first half cut the lead to 21-14.
The Braves’ defense shut out the Thunderbolts in the second half.
In the fourth quarter, Hood tied the game with a 3-yard touchdown run, setting up Della Vecchia’s heroics.
Absegami improved its record to 3-1, and Millville dropped to 2-2.
ST. AUGUSTINE 49, OCEAN CITY 7: Noir Chavvaria scored the first touchdown of his career in the fourth quarter for the Red Raiders.
The score came on a 7-yard run, and was followed by a Kyle Norton PAT kick.
Calvin Cass scored five touchdowns for the Hermits, on runs of 1, 81, 38, 25 and 44 yards.
Ocean City fell to 0-4. St. Augustine remained unbeaten at 4-0.
ATLANTIC CITY 33, OAKCREST 6: Tyshiek Wright scored twice in the win, on a 5-yard touchdown reception from Jarren McBride in the second quarter and on a 52-yard fumble recovery.
Atlantic City improved to 2-1, while Oakcrest dropped to 0-4.
CEDAR CREEK 27, BUENA 7: Damon Mitchell accounted for three of the Pirates’ touchdowns. He got the scoring going in the first quarter with a 6-yard run, but Cedar Creek missed the PAT and Buena took a 7-6 lead following a fumble recovery in the end zone.
Mitchell put Cedar Creek ahead for good with a 10-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. He then added a 9-yard score.
Cedar Creek remained undefeated at 4-0, and handed Buena (3-1) its first loss of the year.
HOLY SPIRIT 21, MAINLAND 6: TJ Anderson accounted for two scores, on a 62-yard pass to AJ Dawson and on a 1-yard run, both in the third quarter. Dawson also had a 56-yard run for the Spartans in the first quarter, as Holy Spirit (1-2) picked up its first win of the year. The Mustangs dropped to 1-3.
WILDWOOD 61, MAPLE SHADE 34: Wesley Hills scored eight touchdowns as the Warriors knocked off previously unbeaten Maple Shade in West Jersey Football League action.
Hills scored on runs of 33, 80, 75, 3628, 60 and 81 yards. He also caught a 37-yard pass for a score.
