Galloway Resident Named Academic All-American

Mary Lumor, a volleyball player at Atlantic Cape, was named an Academic all-American.

Atlantic Cape Community College has had two student-athletes named Academic All-Americans by the National Junior College Athletic Association for 2010-2011, and one of them is from Galloway Township, the school announced on Thursday.

Mary Lumor is an all-purpose volleyball player for the school. The 18-year-old has maintained a 3.72 GPA, and is working toward a nursing associate in applied science degree.

She graduated from Absegami High School, and is in her second year at the college.

The other Academic all-American was John Benigno, of North Cape May. Benigno is a goalie on the soccer team, and has maintained a 3.71 GPA Benigno is also 20.

“John was a quiet leader and a steady performer who worked hard to improve his skills, as he didn’t play in high school,” Atlantic Cape Community College Senior Athletics and Fitness Manager Mike Rennick said.

To be eligible for Academic All-American recognition by the NJCAA, student-athletes must complete three college semesters, maintain a 3.6-3.79 GPA for 45 semester hours and letter in at least one sport recognized by the NJCAA.
