More Than 500 Volunteers Turn Out for Stockton Day of Service

The college held its eighth annual Martin Luther King Day of Service on Monday.

saw its larges turnout for its Martin Luther King Day of Service for its eighth annual celebration on Monday, Jan. 16, as more than 500 members from the campus and the community volunteered their time for various organizations on and off campus.

There were over 300 volunteers last year.

First, Stockton held its Martin Luther King Day celebration, in which it presented its 2012 Community Engagement Awards and Third Grade Teacher delivered the keynote address.

Awards were given to one student in each grade at each of the four elementary schools. Three prizes were awarded to students at the , and four prizes were awarded to students at

Kindergarten: Ethan Martin

First Grade: Riya Patel

Second Grade: Parth Patel

Third Grade: Matthew Vibora

Fourth Grade: Lindsey Calixtro

Fifth Grade: Ashley Ly

Sixth Grade: Suzanna Sandoval

Galloway Township Middle School:

First Place: Daniel Hershman

Second Place: Nicholas Polis

Third Place: Pablo Urcuyo

Absegami High School:

First Place: Rebecca Maguire

Second Place: Imani Reed

Third Place: Akshari Patel

Fourth Place: Samantha Allen

There were 22 organizations on and off campus that participated in the Day of Service, including Books Without Borders, which sent 2,000 books to less-priveleged communities in South Africa, and is hoping to build a library in a township that currently has a population of 250,000 people and no library.

Campus Kitchens, at Atlantic City High School;

CARING Adult Day Care Center, one in Atlantic City and one in Pleasantville;

Circle K;

Career Oppurtunity Development Inc.;

Eastern Service Workers Association;

Family Service Association;

Gilda's Club South Jersey;

Girl Scouts of New Jersey;

Osprey Nest Construction;

Samaritan Hospice;

Seashore Gardens Living Center;

South Shore Ministries Thrift Store, in Northfield and in Oceanville; and

Zion Lutheran Church in Egg Harbor City.
