Roland Rogers Teacher One Week Away From $10,000 Grant

Third-grade teacher Terry Dougherty is one of two finalists in the Great American Teach Off.

third-grade teacher Terry Dougherty has never been one to brag about herself or what she does, but the month of October has seen her participate in various interviews with newspapers, TV stations and websites, including Galloway Patch.

She's been asked a lot of questions about participating in GOOD's Great American Teach Off, and on Monday afternoon, Oct. 31, it was revealed she now has a 50/50 shot at winning a $10,000 grant.

Dougherty is one of two finalists in this year's Great American Teach Off, sponsored by GOOD and the University of Phoenix. She was one of 10 teachers eligible for the prize when the contest began back on Oct. 3, and now she and Chris Hoeh, a second-grade teacher at Cambridge Friends School in Massachusetts, will face off over the next week for the grand prize.

was nominated to participate in the contest based on her work with children who have parents in the military, and thus find themselves in multiple new environments as their parents are transferred from state to state.

She was by the earlier this year, before being nominated to participate in the contest.

Each week, a new question is asked of the teachers remaining in the contest, and their video response is posted on the website, good.is/gato. Those who wish to visit must register with the site, and are able to vote once a day, every day.

Up to this point, the two teachers with the least amount of votes have been eliminated. This week, the teacher who receives more votes will win the $10,000 grant for his or her school district.
