Whiz Kid’s Keys to Awesomeness:

Adam Bouknewicz first became certified in Zumba at 15 and has been teaching the dance since he was 16. He has five certifications, and teaches five classes a week, including two on Saturdays. He teaches at the high school and at Tilton Fitness, as well as Custom Fitness.

He has taught the dance in a fundraising capacity, raising $760 for the Heart Association during a fundraiser at Absegami.

“I wanted to give back by not just working at the gym, but also by volunteering,” Bokunewicz said. “I began taking classes two years ago and my instructor inspired me to come back. That winter, I got my certification.”

Bokunewicz said he wasn’t sure what Zumba was when he first went to classes, but that it quickly grew on him.

“You get lost in the music,” Bokunewicz said. “It’s different than other programs because it focuses on the fun. You don’t realize you’re burning calories.

“I wasn’t a dancer before that, but Zumba helped me express myself. … I was very lost at first. I kept coming back, but it was hard. It was my second or third class before I really knew what it was.”

Bokunewicz said that teaching is far different than dancing, but that he enjoys doing both. He teaches a wide range of students, from 16 or 17 to the mid 70s.

“People get scared when they think of it as a dance class,” Bokunewicz said.

Bokunewicz said his primary love is the theater.

“Theater is the goal for me, and maybe be an instructor on the side,” Bokunewicz said. “That’s my ideal goal for life.”
