Whiz Kid’s Keys to Awesomeness:

Edward Kertz caught the creative bug from his dad, and his hope is to turn that into a career as a mechanical engineer. So far, he seems to be on the right track at the Atlantic County Institute of Technology in Mays Landing.

“He’s excelled since the beginning,” Edward’s mother Lori said. “As a freshman, he was named Engineering Student of the Month in the first marking period. His teachers were very impressed. Very rarely does that happen.”

Kertz is in the Math, Engineering and Science Academy at the school, which has four separate academies. It isn’t easy to get into the school, as applicants need to have good grades and they are placed on a waiting list before they can be accepted.

“As he got into the fourth and fifth grade, we could see his mind was always going,” Kertz said. “He likes to make things. It keeps him motivated.”

He was part of a team that made a robot that advanced to a state-level competition. It didn’t win, but it did well.

“All the robots (in the competition) did the same thing,” Kertz said. “It picked up a baton and had to put it in a certain area. It had to climb mountains and it had to balance on a teeter totter.”

He is also in the Atlantic County 4H, and will competing in a national 4H competition for a full week in San Antonio, Texas beginning June 19.

He is also in the South Jersey Gas Engines Club, where he has rebuilt engines, and he is an Altar Server for his church.
