Whiz Kid’s Keys to Awesomeness: Both of Hannah Jones’ grandparents loved to knit, so it was natural it would be something the fourth-grader at Reeds Road Elementary School would pick up.

What she did with what she knit was the truly amazing thing.

On Wednesday, Jones delivered 15 hats she knit herself and delivered them to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.

“She came up with the idea to make them for the hospital,” said Karen Jones, Hannah’s mother. “She would come home and do it every night. She stopped for a little while, but then she started up again.”

Karen said Hannah knit one and a half hats a day, and that Karen knit one herself.

“I made one and she did the rest,” Jones said. “She picked out the color yarn, decided how to match them and then made them.”

“I did it for three or for months,” Hannah Jones said. “I did it for an hour or two every night. I got into it because I was bored and I didn’t know what to do.”

Karen Jones said the staff at AtlantiCare was thrilled to receive the hats. The members of the staff who received the hats were there in 1997, when Karen’s son, Steve was born. He is deaf, among other disabilities, Karen Jones said.

“They were thrilled,” Karen Jones said. “For them, it was like coming (full circle) with our family. They were all going crazy.

“She loves arts and crafts. This is something she can do with her hands and it’s creative.”
