Whiz Kid’s Keys to Awesomeness:

Absegami High School Sophomore Marla Reese has sung in front of the Taj Mahal, loves English, Spanish and History classes, and is heavily involved in singing and performing at her school.

She’s now also getting ready to join the school’s , which finished second in the statewide acting competition last year.

“I had a lot of friends who did it, so I joined, and then I found out we got second place last year,” Reese said.

It shouldn’t be intimidating to Reese, who played Susan Waverly in the school’s winter musical production of “White Christmas,” and is getting ready to play Rapunzel in the spring musical with the drama club.

She’s also part of the select choir.

“During the holidays, we sang in front of the Taj Mahal and for Lite Rock (96.9) radio station,” Reese said. “We were also at the Tabernacle in Ocean City.”

She’s sung in front of the Taj Mahal since she was in middle school. Her group sits in front of the entrance and greets those who enter the Atlantic City casino.

“I love to sing,” said Reese, who is classically trained in opera. “In pre-school, I was that annoying kid who was singing all the time.

“There’s no better feeling than to sing. I love music theory. I got it all from my dad. He can play any instrument.”

Reese plays the guitar. She also loves acting.

“It’s fun to pretend to be someone else,” Reese said. “It’s nice to be able to escape for a couple of hours, when I failed a test or if there’s someone making me upset.”

Reese describes herself as an A-B student who counts English, Spanish, History and Geometry among her favorite subjects. Her favorite era in history is the American Revolution.
