Whiz Kid’s Keys to Awesomeness:

Sonia Rubillo maintains a high GPA and standing in her class while taking honors classes, and to get it all done, she doesn’t waste a single minute.

“I do my homework in study hall, and if I don’t get it all done, I make sure it’s the first thing I do when I get home,” Rubillo said. “ … At meets, in between races, I study.”

Rubillo is enrolled in Honors English, Honors World History, Classical Science, Spanish 2, Algebra and Geometry. She has crew practice every day during the week, and meets last from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the weekends. The season began this past weekend, and the team did well.

“I started doing it in the fall, and I love it because it’s great teamwork,” Rubillo said. “One person can’t win a race. It’s also great exercise and it’s really exciting.”

She began training until the beginning of the season, Rubillo has dropped 33 seconds off her time, from nine minutes down to 8:37, quite an accomplishment for a freshman.

Rubillo aims to be a doctor someday. While she aims to go into the medical field, she is already a role model for her 13-year-old sister.

“She wants to join the crew team in high school,” Rubillo said.
