Absegami has Strong Showing at Districts

Brandon Goldberg pulls off upset at 112 pounds.

Better late than never.
Absegami High School's Brandon Goldberg recorded the first real upset of Friday night at the District 32 Wrestling Tournament to advance to tomorrow morning's semifinals.
The Braves 112-pounder, who is seeded No. 6, trailed for most of the match against Buena Regional's Connor Palmieri, who was the No. 3 seed.  However, Goldberg scored late in the third period to force overtime, and quickly scored a takedown in the extra period to take the win.
Goldberg is now one win away from advancing to next week's Region 8 Tournament. The top-three finishers in each weight class at districts advances to regions.
"I knew I had a good shot of winning tonight," Goldberg said. "I barely lost to him during the season. I knew I had a good chance to win."
Goldberg trailed 5-4 late in the third period, and allowed Palmieri to escape so he could set yup for the match-tying takedown.
"I knew I couldn't ride him out so i just cut him (loose)," Goldberg said. "I needed two takedowns to win. I took him down earlier in the match so I knew I could do it. I was in better shape and that helped me win. I was in better shape, and he was really tired. That pumped me up."
In the extra session Goldberg didn't waste any time. Soon as the referee blew his whistle, Goldberg went on the attack. He registered a quick takedown to pull off the win. Goldberg will face No. 2 seed Josh Dickinson of Lower Cape May. If Goldberg should lose he will still get a chance to advance during the consolation round.
"I just have to wrestle like I did tonight," Goldberg said. "If I do that I think I can win."
Goldberg will have plenty of teammates with him on  Saturday, as Mike Giampetti (119), John Willette (130), Nate Ross  (140), Chris Hahn (152), Alex Gong (171), Kevin Stadtmueller (215) and Steve Schwartz (heavyweight) advanced to Saturday's semifinals.
"I'm excited for tomorrow," Ross said. "I have been looking forward to this match all week."
