Cedar Creek Football Team Shuts Out Ocean City in First Conference Game

The Cedar Creek High School football team scored nearly 50 points in the program’s inaugural conference game, shutting out Ocean City Friday night.

The Pirates defeated the Red Raiders, 47-0, in the season opener for both Cape-Atlantic League teams Friday night, Sept. 7 in Ocean City. The Pirates were up, 40-0, at halftime.

Running back Gary Melton scored twice, first on a 5-yard run in the first quarter that served as the first score of the game, and later on a 19-yard run in the second that made the score 19-0. He ran for 35 total yards.

Quarterback Damon Mitchell scored twice, once running and once passing. He took it in from 1 yard out in the second quarter. He also had a 16-yard touchdown pass to Nolan Seward. Seward also returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter.

The Pirates also scored on a fumble recovery, returned by Caleb Graves 20 yards for a touchdown. Nate Pauls added a 64-yard run for a score in the fourth.

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP 14, OAKCREST 9: The Eagles dropped the Falcons on the final play of the game when Austin Gray sacked quarterback Quaashie Jetter.

Curtis Fitzpatrick scored Egg Harbor Township’s first touchdown on a 5-yard run in the first quarter, but the Falcons tied the game in the second quarter when Jetter carried the ball in from 1 yard out.

The winning score came in the third quarter via a 3-yard touchdown run by Matt Clayton. Egg Harbor Township gave up a safety in the fourth to make the final score 14-9.

HAMMONTON 22, HOLY SPIRIT 20, OT: Dom Williams scored the winning touchdown for Hammonton on a 9-yard run in overtime before preventing a Holy Spirit two-point conversion attempt on the final play to preserve the win. The Blue Devils’ two-point conversion proved to be the difference.

The Spartans’ Talib Gerald answered Williams’ score with a 25-yard scoring run, but was stopped by Williams on the two-point conversion.

The overtime score was Williams’ third of the game. He scored on a 5-yard run in the first quarter and a 10-yard run in the second.

One play after Williams’ first score, the Spartans’ Talib Gerald returned a kickoff 86 yards to tie the score at 6-6.  The Spartans answered the second score with a 42-yard touchdown pass from C.J. LaFragola to Jordan Taylor, to tie the game at 14-14.

MILLVILLE 24, ATLANTIC CITY 19: Thunderbolts’ quarterback Rashon Sorrell delivered a 73-yard strike to DeQwan Bowman with one minute, 43 seconds left in the game to give Millville the opening night win.  It was Bowman’s second touchdown of the night, after he scored on a 2-yard run on the first play of the game.  Sorrell also had a touchdown pass in the second quarter.

Atlantic City running back Domeneek Brown-Hurd scored twice, on runs of 5 and 2 yards, and had a total of 118 yards rushing.

After a 79-yard touchdown run by Rob Ennis for the Bolts in the third quarter that put Millville up, 18-13, Demond Cottman’s 11-yard touchdown run gave Atlantic City the lead back at 19-18 before Sorrell’s heroics.

BRIDGETON 25, LOWER CAPE MAY 6: Frank Ziegler’s 28-yard run for a score to open the second quarter gave the Caper Tigers a 6-0 lead, but was Lower Cape May’s only score of the game in an opening night loss to the Bulldogs.

MAINLAND REGIONAL 28, PLEASANTVILLE 0: Four different players scored for Mainland in the opening night shutout. Brett Edmunds had a 90-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Dylan Swenson delivered a 17-yard touchdown pass to Tim Reed in the fourth. Colin O’Shea opened the scoring with a 2-yard run in the first, followed by a 1-yard touchdown run from Tommy Bradway.

ST. AUGUSTINE 43, MIDDLE TOWNSHIP 8: Calvin Cass had 153 yards rushing and three touchdowns, including one receiving, in the Hermits’ victory.

WILDWOOD 16, CLAYTON 8: Wesley Hills ran for 142 yards and two touchdowns in the Warriors’ opening night win in West Jersey Football League action. The winning score came on a Hills 85-yard run in the second quarter to break an 8-8 tie.
