Galloway Softball Players Take on the Best in the World

Morgan Brown and Ryann Guy recently participated in the USSSA Fast Pitch World Series.

Morgan Brown and Ryann Guy had a chance to meet and play against softball players from throughout the East Coast at the USSSA
Fast-Pitch Softball 16-Under World Series in Salisbury, Maryland.

The two Galloway Township teenagers are part of the South Jersey
Devils, a team based out of Mays Landing that features players from
throughout South Jersey.

"It was really good," said Brown, 13. "It was a really good experience
meeting girls from all different states."

"I had a good time," said Guy, 14. "My favorite part was probably
playing in the games. I also learned how to work with my team."

The Devils went 0-4-1 at the World Series, but both players enjoyed
the experience.

"I scored the only run in one game, I had a pretty good bunt and some singles," Brown said.

"It was better than I expected," Guy said. "I think I did pretty well."

Brown and Guy are among the youngest players on the Devils, but
playing with and against older competition is advantageous for them,
according to their coach, Ed Perkins.

"Both have potential to be very good players," Perkins explained.
"They are young. They are on a team with 16-year-olds and they are 13 (and 14). They definitely have qualities about them and they have room for advancement."

He added: "As far as I'm concerned you have different levels of softball. You start with rec league and then girls achieve that goal.
Then they go to high school and girls achieve that goal. Then there is
ASA or travel ball and that to me is the top of the line. That is the
best competition. You see more competition there, and Ryann and Morgan will gain from playing at that level."

Both girls are outfielders, but Brown also pitches.

"Playing on the Devils has helped me a lot with my throwing, batting
and my pitching," Brown said.

"Ryan has incredible speed to lay down the bunt and get down the
first-base line like there's no tomorrow," Perkins said. "She did a
lot of pinch running for me this year. Morgan is a decent hitter and
makes contact with the ball. She can drive it into the grass. Ryann
can, as well."

EXTRA BASES: The South Jersey Devils are holding tryouts for their
18-under squad. Tryouts are 4-7 p.m. on Aug. 14; 6-830 p.m. on Aug. 16; and 6-8:30 p.m. on Aug. 18 at Lake Lenape.
