State Announces Wrestling Pairings

Absegami's four qualifiers begin competition in the first round Friday night.

The NJSIAA has announced the pairings for this weekend's State Wrestling Championships.

Absegami High School's Mike Jiampetti (119 pounds), Alex Gong (171), Kevin Stadtmueller (215) and Steve Schwartz (heavyweight) all begin their quest for a state title in the opening round, which begins on Friday night at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall.

Jiampetti (30-8), who finished second in the District 32 and Region 8 tournaments, meets Kevin Devoy of Burlington Township. Devoy (32-4) finished second at districts and third in regions.

Three of Devoy’s four losses came at the hands of Eastern's Robert Deutsch. His other loss was in regions against Camden Catholic's Chad Walsh. The winner will meet the winner of Jackson's Mike Shupin versus High Point's William Hagany match.

Gong (33-6), who took third at regions, takes on Paul Cafone of West Essex. The West Essex senior is 31-9, won a district title and is a regions runner-up. The winner will take on Roselle Park's Vic Pozsonyi.

Stadtmueller (30-4) returns to the state tournament off a second place at regions. The Absegami senior is scheduled to wrestle Ocean Township's Colton Bigelow (19-1), who was first in districts and third in regions. The winner will face either Mendham's Chris Florek or Sayreville's Christopher Raub.

Schwartz (32-6), who was third at regions, wrestles Sayreville's Tyler Carlock (31-7), who was first at districts and second in regions. The winner meets Northern Highlands' Matthew Mecca in the next round.
